What does this background remover do?
This tool removes a solid or plain-color background from a photo - white, black, gray, or any other flat backdrop - and replaces it with a transparent, white, or custom-color background instead. It works by measuring how close each pixel's color is to the background color, so it's best suited to product photos, ID and passport photos, logos, and studio shots taken against a plain backdrop, rather than busy real-world scenes. Everything runs locally in your browser using the Canvas API, so your images are never uploaded to a server.
How to remove a background
- Drop one or more images onto the drop zone, or click Browse files.
- Leave Auto-detect corners selected to sample the background color from the image's four corners, or switch to Pick a color and click directly on the background in the Before preview.
- Adjust Tolerance to control how close a color needs to be to the background to get removed, and Edge softness for a smoother or harder cutout edge.
- Use Edge shrink/grow to trim a thin ring of leftover background color, or expand the cutout slightly if part of the subject got removed.
- Choose Transparent, White, or a custom color for the output background.
- Click Remove background for the active image, or process the whole batch at once, then download individually or as a ZIP.
Tolerance, edge softness, and edge shrink/grow
Tolerance sets how far a pixel's color can be from the detected background color and still count as background. Raise it for backgrounds with shading, gradients, or slight color variation across the frame; lower it if the tool is removing parts of the subject that happen to be a similar color to the background.
Edge softness controls the width of the transition band at the cutout boundary, producing an anti-aliased edge instead of a hard, jagged one. Edge shrink/grow moves the cutout boundary inward (negative values) or outward (positive values) by a few pixels - shrinking trims off a thin fringe of leftover background color often left along hair or fabric edges, while growing recovers subject detail that got clipped.
Auto-detect vs. picking a color
Auto-detect corners samples the four corners of each image and works well whenever the background reaches the edges of the frame, which is true for most product and studio photography. Pick a color lets you click exactly on the background shade you want removed - useful when the corners aren't representative of the backdrop, or when you want the same background color removed consistently across a batch of similar photos.
Transparent, white, and custom output
Choose Transparent to keep an alpha channel around the cutout subject, ready to drop onto another background or design. Choose White for a clean e-commerce or ID-photo style backdrop, or pick a custom color to match a brand color or a specific backdrop requirement. All three modes export as PNG so the cutout edges stay crisp.
Batch processing
Drop in multiple images and each one keeps its own preview and result - editing or reprocessing one image doesn't affect the others. The current tolerance, softness, shrink/grow, and output settings apply to the whole batch when you click Remove background from all images, and you can still fine-tune and reprocess any single image afterward before downloading everything as a ZIP.
