How the Net Profit Margin Calculator Works
Enter Revenue, Operating expenses, Interest expense, and Tax expense. Choose a currency display and a Period: Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project. The result shows net profit, net profit margin, operating profit, pre-tax profit, and the calculation details.
Formula Used
Operating profit = Revenue - Operating expenses
Pre-tax profit = Operating profit - Interest expense
Net profit = Pre-tax profit - Tax expense
Net profit margin % = Net profit / Revenue x 100
Calculations use the entered numeric values. Displayed monetary and percentage results are formatted to two decimal places.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter all four numeric values for the same period and scope. Revenue must be greater than 0; the three expense fields must be 0 or more.
- In Currency symbol, choose the display option you need, including None. This changes the displayed prefix only.
- Choose a Period: Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, or Per project. This labels the figures and does not convert them.
- Click Calculate. If an input fails validation, an error appears instead of a result.
- Click Reset to clear the inputs, restore the currency to
$and the period toMonthly, and hide the result.
Read, Copy, or Download the Result
The result shows net profit, net profit margin, and operating profit as headline figures. Its table also lists the inputs, period, pre-tax profit, net margin, and total deductions.
Use Copy result to copy a plain-text summary containing the inputs, intermediate profits, net profit, and net margin. Clipboard access can fail; when it does, the calculator displays Could not copy - select and copy manually. Use Download result (.txt) to generate a text file in the browser. The downloaded text includes the intermediate values but not the table's total deductions line.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Keep revenue, expenses, interest, and tax on the same period and scope.
- Period is a label only; it does not annualize or convert figures.
- Currency symbol changes the displayed symbol only; it does not convert values or use exchange rates.
- Enter interest and tax as amounts. The tool does not calculate them from rates, loan terms, or tax brackets.
- Net profit and net margin can be negative when deductions exceed revenue.
- The calculator does not fetch live market prices, industry benchmarks, or accounting records.
- Depreciation, amortization, and one-off items are not handled separately unless included in the figures you enter.

Privacy and Browser Calculation
The calculator script performs the arithmetic and creates the result from values entered in your browser; it contains no calculator-data upload request. The shared page head also loads Ahrefs Analytics and Google Analytics, so the local files do not establish whether analytics collect calculator input values. No site-wide account requirement is stated here.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is net profit margin?
Net profit margin is net profit expressed as a percentage of revenue. Net profit is what remains of revenue after subtracting operating expenses, interest, and tax, so net margin shows what share of each revenue dollar is left after every cost of running the business for the period.
What is the net profit margin formula?
Operating profit = Revenue - Operating expenses. Pre-tax profit = Operating profit - Interest expense. Net profit = Pre-tax profit - Tax expense. Net profit margin % = Net profit / Revenue x 100. For example, $100,000 revenue, $60,000 operating expenses, $5,000 interest, and $8,000 tax gives $27,000 net profit and a 27% net margin.
How is net profit margin different from gross margin?
Gross margin only subtracts direct cost (materials, direct labor, cost of goods sold) from revenue. Net profit margin goes further and subtracts all operating expenses, interest, and tax as well, so it reflects overall profitability rather than just production or delivery cost.
Can net profit margin be negative?
Yes. If operating expenses, interest, and tax together exceed revenue, net profit is negative - meaning the business made a loss for the period - and net profit margin is shown as a negative percentage.
Does this tool fetch live data or give personalized financial advice?
No. It performs a single, transparent calculation using only the revenue, operating expenses, interest, and tax figures you type in. It does not fetch market prices, industry benchmarks, or accounting records, and it is not personalized financial, accounting, or tax advice.
