Reorder Point Calculator

Enter your average and maximum daily demand, plus average and maximum lead time, to calculate safety stock and the reorder point. The formula, every assumption, and intermediate values are shown alongside the result.

Typical number of units used or sold per day.

The highest daily demand you reasonably expect, used to size the safety stock buffer.

Typical number of days between placing an order and receiving it.

The longest lead time you reasonably expect, in case of supplier delays.

How to Use the Reorder Point Calculator

Enter four values, then select Calculate Reorder Point: Average daily demand, Maximum daily demand, Average lead time (days), and Maximum lead time (days). Use demand in units per day and lead time in days.

  1. Enter the average and maximum demand in units per day.
  2. Enter the average and maximum lead time in days.
  3. Select Calculate Reorder Point.
  4. To start over, select Reset. It clears all four inputs, hides the result, and clears validation errors.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses the numeric values you enter:

  • Safety stock = (Max daily demand × Max lead time) − (Average daily demand × Average lead time)
  • Reorder point = (Average daily demand × Average lead time) + Safety stock
  • Average usage during lead time = Average daily demand × Average lead time

Units and Input Checks

All four values must be numbers greater than 0. Maximum daily demand must be greater than or equal to Average daily demand, and Maximum lead time (days) must be greater than or equal to Average lead time (days). If a check fails, the calculator shows a specific error and does not display a result.

Reading and Saving the Result

After a valid calculation, the result section shows Reorder point (units), Safety stock (units), and Average usage during lead time (units). It also includes the Formula used section and a table of entered and intermediate values.

Displayed, copied, and downloaded numbers are formatted to at most two decimal places. Select Copy result to use the plain-text summary. Clipboard access can fail; in that case, the tool shows Could not copy - select and copy manually. Select Download result (.txt) to create a plain-text file.

Limits of the Calculation

This tool performs one calculation from the four numeric values you provide. It does not fetch live supplier data, market records, or live rates, and it is not personalized business or inventory advice. Ordering cost, holding cost, quantity discounts, order quantity, multiple suppliers, and multiple items are not built into the calculation.

Calculator Values and Page Privacy

The calculator script performs the arithmetic locally in your browser, and the inspected calculator code does not send the values you enter in a request. This statement applies to the calculator values only; the page also loads analytics and includes a separate subscription form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reorder point?

The reorder point is the inventory level at which you should place a new order so that stock does not run out before the replenishment arrives, accounting for expected usage during lead time plus a safety stock buffer.

What is the reorder point formula?

Reorder point = (Average daily demand x Average lead time) + Safety stock. Safety stock is calculated as (Maximum daily demand x Maximum lead time) - (Average daily demand x Average lead time), which covers unexpected spikes in demand or delays in lead time.

What units should demand and lead time use?

Demand should be entered as units per day, and lead time as days. Keep both inputs on the same daily basis - if your demand is weekly or your lead time is in weeks, convert to a consistent daily unit before entering the values.

Why must maximum demand and maximum lead time be greater than or equal to the average values?

The calculator treats maximum demand and maximum lead time as maximum scenarios. Each must be greater than or equal to its corresponding average; otherwise, the calculator blocks the calculation and shows a validation error.

Does this tool fetch live rates or give personalized inventory advice?

No. It performs a single, transparent calculation using only the numbers you type in - average demand, maximum demand, average lead time, and maximum lead time. It does not fetch supplier data, market records, or live rates, and it is not personalized business or inventory advice.
