How to Use the Deck Calculator
Enter the dimensions and framing values for one rectangular deck, then select Calculate.
- Enter Deck length and Deck width, and choose their units.
- Enter Decking board width, Gap between boards, Board length (stock size), and Waste / overage %.
- Enter Joist spacing (on-center), Number of beams, and Post spacing (on-center). Number of beams is your framing assumption; the tool does not calculate it.
- Select Calculate to display the result.
- Select Reset to clear the dimensions, restore the defaults, hide the result, and clear errors.
What the Result Shows
The headline figures show Decking boards, Joists, Posts, and Deck area. The Formula used block contains one combined formula block. Its table lists converted dimensions, rows, linear footage, beam values, post values, and other intermediate values. The displayed Number of beams comes from your input; beam linear feet and total posts are calculated from it.
Calculation Formulas
The calculator applies these five steps:
Decking rows = ceil(Deck width x 12 / (Board width + Gap))Linear feet (with waste) = Rows x Deck length x (1 + Waste % / 100)Boards needed = ceil(Linear feet with waste / Board length)Joists = ceil(Deck length x 12 / Joist spacing) + 1Posts per beam = ceil(Deck length / Post spacing) + 1; Total posts = Beams x Posts per beam
Waste / overage % affects decking linear footage only. Joist count uses deck length and joist spacing; posts use the entered Number of beams and post spacing.
Supported Units and Validation
- Deck length and Deck width: ft, in, yd, m, or cm.
- Decking board width and Gap between boards: in or cm.
- Board length (stock size) and Post spacing (on-center): ft or m.
- Joist spacing (on-center): in or cm.
The script validates the number you enter against fixed ranges before converting units: deck length and width 0.1-500; board width 0.5-24; gap 0-2; board length 1-100; waste 0-50; joist spacing 4-48; Number of beams 2-20 as a whole number; and post spacing 0.5-20. These ranges apply to the entered numeric value for the selected unit. Invalid input stops the calculation and shows an error.
Framing Assumptions and Limitations
The model assumes one rectangular deck, decking running the full deck length, joists spanning the full deck width, and beams running the full deck length. Joist spacing, post spacing, and Number of beams are user-entered assumptions, not code or span-table lookups.
It does not model stairs, railings, picture-frame borders, cantilevers, ledger attachment, footing depth or size, non-rectangular layouts, live pricing, supplier data, or certified structural advice. Confirm code requirements and allowable spans with local code and a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the deck board formula?
Decking rows = ceil(Deck width x 12 / (Board width + Gap)). Linear feet needed (with waste) = Rows x Deck length x (1 + Waste % / 100). Boards needed = ceil(Linear feet with waste / Board length). For example, a 20 ft x 12 ft deck with 5.5 in boards and a 0.25 in gap needs 26 rows; at 20 ft per row that is 520 linear feet, or about 572 with 10% waste, which is 48 boards at 12 ft each.
How does the calculator estimate joists, beams, and posts?
Joists are assumed to run perpendicular to the decking, spanning the deck width, and are spaced along the deck length: Joist count = ceil(Deck length x 12 / Joist spacing) + 1. Beams run parallel to the decking and support the joist ends; you enter the Number of beams the frame uses (2 for a simple deck, more for a wide deck with a mid-span beam). Posts are spaced along each beam: Posts per beam = ceil(Deck length / Post spacing) + 1, and Total posts = Beams x Posts per beam.
Does the joist spacing or post spacing come from a building code table?
No. Joist spacing, post spacing, and Number of beams are values you enter yourself. This tool does not look up span tables, local building codes, or lumber grading rules - confirm allowable spans and spacing with your local code and a qualified professional before building.
What units are supported?
Deck length and width accept feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters. Board width and gap accept inches or centimeters. Board length and post spacing accept feet or meters. Joist spacing accepts inches or centimeters.
Does this tool fetch live pricing or give certified structural advice?
No. It performs a single, transparent calculation using only the dimensions and framing values you type in. It does not fetch material prices, supplier data, or span-table data, and it is not a certified engineering, structural, or purchasing recommendation.
