How to Estimate Paint Quantity
Enter Gross surface area, Number of coats, Waste / overage %, door and window counts and average areas, Paint unit, Coverage rate, and Container size. After a successful calculation, the tool shows the estimate, formula, assumptions, and intermediate values.
Paint Quantity Formula
These steps determine the estimate:
Net area = Gross area - (Doors x Door area) - (Windows x Window area)Area with coats = Net area x CoatsArea with waste = Area with coats x (1 + Waste % / 100)Paint needed = Area with waste / Coverage rateContainers to buy = ceil(Paint needed / Container size)
Example: 400 - (2 x 21) - 15 = 343 sq ft of net area. With 2 coats and 10% waste, 350 sq ft/gal coverage gives approximately 2.16 gallons, rounded up to 3 one-gallon containers.
How to Use the Paint Calculator
- Enter the gross wall or ceiling area before subtracting openings. Use each wall's length x height, added together, or ceiling length x width.
- Set coats and waste. The defaults are 2 coats and 10% waste.
- Enter door and window counts and average areas. Use a count of 0 when openings were already excluded from the area.
- Choose Gallons (US) or Liters with Paint unit, then enter the matching Coverage rate.
- Enter the Container size you plan to buy and click Calculate.
- After the result appears, use Copy result or Download result (.txt).
Units, Defaults, and Coverage Rates
- Gross surface area: sq ft, sq m, or sq yd.
- Door and window area: sq ft or sq m.
- Paint unit: Gallons (US) uses sq ft/gal coverage; Liters uses sq m/L coverage.
- Changing Paint unit changes the coverage convention, container default, door/window area units, and related defaults.
- Coverage rate is entered by you. Check the paint label for its per-coat rate.
Validation and Reading the Result
Values are checked against numeric ranges: surface area 0.1–100,000; coats 1–10; waste 0–50; door and window counts 0–200; opening areas 0.1–200; coverage 0.1–2,000; and container size 0.01–100. The script parses numeric values and does not enforce whole numbers for coats or counts. Door and window deductions also cannot equal or exceed the gross area.
An error hides the result section. A successful calculation reveals it with headline values, the formula, assumptions, converted areas, deductions, coated and waste areas, and final volume. Displayed values use different precision in the headline and table, while container count is rounded up.
Limitations and Calculator Data Handling
This is a mathematical estimate using the values you enter. It assumes uniform coverage at the entered rate and does not separately model primer, trim, multiple colors, surface porosity, texture, hiding power, or product-specific label instructions. It does not fetch live pricing, supplier availability, or brand-specific coverage data.
Calculator inputs are processed in the browser by the calculator script. The page also loads analytics, records page views, and includes a newsletter form that submits an email address, so calculator-local processing should not be read as a page-wide promise that no data is sent to a server.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the paint quantity formula?
Net area = Gross area - (Doors x Door area) - (Windows x Window area). Area with coats = Net area x Coats. Area with waste = Area with coats x (1 + Waste % / 100). Paint needed = Area with waste / Coverage rate. Containers to buy = ceil(Paint needed / Container size). For example, 400 sq ft of wall with 2 coats, 2 doors (21 sq ft each) and 1 window (15 sq ft), 10% waste, and 350 sq ft/gal coverage gives 343 sq ft of net area and approximately 2.16 gallons before rounding up to 3 one-gallon cans.
How do I get the surface area to enter into the calculator?
Enter the total gross wall, ceiling, or trim area you plan to paint (length x height for each wall, added together), before subtracting doors and windows - the calculator subtracts those for you using the door and window fields.
Does this account for primer or multiple paint colors?
No. The calculator estimates one paint product across the number of coats you specify. If you use a separate primer coat or multiple colors, run the calculator once per product with the relevant coat count and coverage rate for each.
What units are supported?
Surface area accepts square feet, square meters, or square yards. Door and window area accept square feet or square meters. Paint volume is calculated in gallons (with sq ft/gal coverage) or liters (with sq m/L coverage), selected with the Paint unit selector.
Does this tool fetch live pricing or give certified advice?
No. It performs a single, transparent calculation using only the area, coats, coverage rate, and door/window figures you type in. It does not fetch paint prices or brand-specific coverage data, and it is not certified painting advice.
