How to Use the Paver Calculator
Enter the project values in the order shown, then select Calculate.
- Enter Area to pave and choose
sq ft,sq yd, orsq m. - Enter Paver size (length x width) and choose
inorcm. - Choose Laying pattern. It fills a starting value in Waste / cut-loss %, which you can edit from 0 to 50.
- Enter Base depth and Bedding sand depth. A depth of zero excludes that layer.
- Choose a density preset for each layer. To enter a value yourself, select Custom density; the matching density field then becomes editable.
- Select Calculate. Use Reset to restore the preset values and clear the result.
What the Result Shows
The headline statistics show Pavers needed, Base material volume, Base material weight, and Bedding sand volume. Bedding sand weight appears in the assumptions table, not in the headline statistics.
The table lists converted area, paver area, waste-adjusted area, layer depths and densities, and volume and weight conversions. Volumes are shown in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters; weights use US short tons and metric tonnes. Formula used displays the calculation formulas.

How the Calculator Computes the Estimate
Paver area = Length x Width
Area with waste = Area x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Pavers needed = ceil(Area with waste / Paver area)
Base/sand volume = Area x Layer depth
Base/sand weight = Layer volume x Density
Base and sand use their own entered depth and density. The paver waste percentage is not applied to those layer volumes.
Patterns, Waste, Units, and Density Controls
- Laying pattern: Running bond and Stack bond / jack-on-jack start at about 5%; Basketweave at about 8%; Herringbone at about 12%; and Circular / fan / custom at about 15%.
- Changing the pattern resets Waste / cut-loss % to that preset.
- Area:
sq ft,sq yd, orsq m. - Paver dimensions:
inorcm. - Base and sand depth:
in,ft,cm, ormm. - Density:
lb/ft³orkg/m³. Preset density fields are read-only; select Custom density to edit one. Selecting a non-custom preset resets its density unit tolb/ft³.
Validation and Calculation Limits
Area and paver length and width must be greater than zero. Waste / cut-loss % must be from 0 to 50. Base and sand depths may be zero, but densities must be greater than zero. An invalid input stops the calculation and displays an error. Preset values remain available, and displayed results are rounded for readability.
- The estimate assumes one uniform area and one rectangular or square paver size.
- It does not model mixed paver sizes, separate border zones, sub-grade excavation, geotextile fabric, edge restraints, drainage design, delivery logistics, supplier availability, or live pricing.
- It is a mathematical estimate, not certified engineering or purchasing advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the paver count formula?
Paver area = Length x Width. Area with waste = Area x (1 + Waste % / 100). Pavers needed = ceil(Area with waste / Paver area). For example, a 200 sq ft patio with 12 x 6 in pavers (0.5 sq ft each) and 8% waste needs 216 sq ft of coverage, which is 432 pavers.
How much waste should I add for my laying pattern?
This tool offers starting points of about 5% for running or stack bond, 8% for basketweave, 12% for herringbone, and 15% for circular, fan, or custom layouts. These are reference presets, not a site-specific take-off. You can edit the percentage directly from 0% to 50%.
How is the base material and bedding sand calculated?
Both layers use the same formula: Volume = Area x Depth, and Weight = Volume x Density. The calculator computes the compacted base (aggregate) and bedding sand separately. Choose a density preset, or select Custom density to edit the corresponding density field.
What units are supported?
Area accepts square feet, square yards, or square meters. Paver dimensions accept inches or centimeters. Base and sand depths accept inches, feet, centimeters, or millimeters. Densities accept pounds per cubic foot or kilograms per cubic meter. Results show volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters, and weight in US short tons and metric tonnes.
Does this tool fetch live pricing or give certified advice?
No. It performs a calculation in the browser from the area, paver size, pattern, waste percentage, and base/sand depths and densities you enter. It does not fetch material prices, supplier data, or site conditions, and it is not certified engineering or purchasing advice.
