CAGR Calculator

Enter a starting value, an ending value, and the start and end dates. The calculator computes the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), with the formula, every assumption, and intermediate values shown alongside the result.

Enter a number in any unit, such as dollars, revenue, or headcount. Must be greater than 0.

Enter a number using the same unit as the starting value. 0 or greater.

The date the starting value was recorded.

The date the ending value was recorded. Must be after the start date.

How to Use the CAGR Calculator

  1. Enter Starting value (any unit) and Ending value (same unit). Use the same unit for both numbers.
  2. Select Start date and End date for those values.
  3. Click Calculate to generate the result.
  4. Click Reset to clear all four inputs, errors, and the current result.

Read the CAGR Result

The result shows the CAGR, total growth over the period, and years elapsed. It also lists the entered values and dates, the day count, growth multiple, formula, and intermediate values in a table.

For a positive ending value, the CAGR headline is numeric. When the ending value is 0, it shows Undefined with the label CAGR (ending value is 0).

How CAGR Is Calculated

The tool uses this formula:

CAGR = (Ending value / Starting value)^(1 / Years) - 1

It calculates Years by dividing the calendar-day difference between the dates by 365.25. CAGR describes the annualized change between the two endpoints, not the actual path between them.

Input Validation and Limitations

  • Starting value must be greater than 0.
  • Ending value must be 0 or greater.
  • End date must be later than Start date.
  • Dates less than one day apart show: The period between the two dates is too short to calculate an annualized rate.
  • An ending value below a positive starting value produces a negative CAGR.
  • The inputs define minimum values, but no explicit maximum value attributes are present.

The calculation uses only the starting and ending values. It does not represent contributions, withdrawals, dividends, fees, taxes, or changes between the two dates.

Copying, Downloading, and Local Calculation

Copy result uses clipboard access. If copying fails, the tool shows Could not copy - select and copy manually. The Download result (.txt) control saves the displayed result as a text file.

The calculator script performs the calculation in your browser using the values and dates you enter. No upload request appears in the inspected tool implementation; broader site-wide network behavior is not established here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CAGR?

CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is the constant annual growth rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a given period, assuming the growth compounds once per year. It smooths out the actual year-to-year path into a single average rate.

How is CAGR calculated?

CAGR = (Ending value / Starting value)^(1 / Years) - 1, where Years is the number of years between the start and end dates. The result is expressed as a percentage.

How are the number of years calculated from two dates?

This tool counts the exact number of calendar days between the start and end dates, then divides by 365.25 to convert days into years. Using 365.25 instead of 365 accounts for leap years on average, so multi-year periods are not slightly overstated.

Why is CAGR undefined or not shown for some inputs?

CAGR requires a positive starting value; the calculator blocks a starting value of 0 or less because the formula involves dividing by it. If the ending value is 0, CAGR is mathematically undefined for a value that has gone to zero, so the tool reports it as undefined instead of showing a misleading number.

Does this tool use live prices or account data?

No. It only uses the starting value, ending value, and dates that you type in. It does not fetch live prices, market data, or account records, and it is not personalized financial or investment advice.
