Present Value Calculator

Find out what a future amount is worth today. Enter a future amount, annual discount rate, term, and compounding frequency to see the formula, every intermediate value, and a period-by-period discounting schedule.

The amount you expect to receive or need at the end of the term.

The nominal annual rate used to discount the future amount back to today.

The length of time, in the unit selected, until the future amount occurs.

How often the discount rate compounds over the term.

How to Use the Present Value Calculator

Enter the future amount, annual discount rate, term, and compounding frequency, then select Calculate. After a successful calculation, the result section shows the present value, formula, assumptions, and schedule.

  1. Enter Future amount ($), Annual discount rate (%), and Term.
  2. Choose Term unit: Years or Months.
  3. Choose Compounding frequency: Annually (1/year), Semi-annually (2/year), Quarterly (4/year), Monthly (12/year), Bi-weekly (26/year), Weekly (52/year), or Daily (365/year).
  4. Click Calculate. To clear the controls and hide the result, click Reset.

Formula and Period Conventions

The calculator uses the single-lump-sum formula:

PV = FV / (1 + i)^N

  • FV is the future amount.
  • i is the annual discount rate divided by periods per year.
  • N is the total number of periods. A term entered in months is converted to years, multiplied by periods per year, and rounded with Math.round to a whole number.

The calculator assumes one fixed discount rate for the full term. The available frequencies use 1, 2, 4, 12, 26, 52, or 365 periods per year.

Read the Result and Schedule

After a successful calculation, four headline figures appear: Present value, Future amount entered, Total discount (time value of money), and Annual discount rate used. The formula and assumptions show the periodic rate, total periods, and discount factor.

The schedule starts with the present value and applies periodic growth toward the future amount. It displays up to 600 rows. For a longer calculation, the table states that it is showing the first 600 of the total periods.

Copy or Download the Result

Use Copy result to copy the inputs, calculated values, and disclaimer as plain text. Use Download result (.txt) to save that same summary as a .txt file. Neither action includes the displayed schedule rows.

Validation and Limitations

Calculation stops with an error if the inputs are invalid. The calculator requires:

  • Future amount ($) greater than 0.
  • Annual discount rate (%) from 0 to 100.
  • Term greater than 0.
  • A combined term and frequency that produces 1 to 4,800 periods.

This tool calculates one future lump sum with one fixed rate. It does not model multiple future cash flows, variable rates, investment risk, fees, or taxes. It does not fetch live market rates or provide personalized investment advice.

Calculator Data and Page Privacy

The calculator script performs the calculation from the values entered into its controls, and the result states that no live rates were fetched. This page also has a separate subscription form that sends an email address by POST to /assets/subscribe.php; do not treat the calculator description as a claim about every field on the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the present value formula used by this calculator?

PV = FV / (1 + i)^N, where FV is the future amount, i is the periodic discount rate (annual rate divided by periods per year), and N is the total number of periods.

What is a discount rate?

The discount rate is the annual rate used to convert a future amount into an equivalent value today. It reflects the time value of money - a dollar today is generally worth more than a dollar in the future because it can be invested to earn a return.

How does compounding frequency affect present value?

The annual discount rate is divided by the number of periods per year to get the periodic rate, and the term is converted to a matching number of periods. For a positive nominal annual rate and the same term, more frequent compounding produces a lower present value, since the future amount is discounted more times. At 0%, the result is the same for every frequency.

Does this tool give investment advice?

No. It performs a transparent mathematical calculation on the numbers you enter. It does not fetch live market rates, model investment risk or fees, or provide personalized financial or investment advice.
