Recipe Calculator

Scale a recipe by servings or batch weight, or switch modes to calculate baker's percentages, dough hydration, brine concentration, coffee ratio, or pizza dough ingredient quantities. Pick metric or imperial units, choose a rounding policy, and print or download the ingredient table.

Scale a recipe by servings or batch weight

Choose whether to scale using a servings count or a total batch weight.

Rounds only the displayed quantity. The scale factor is always computed at full precision.

IngredientQuantityUnitRemove ingredient

Use the Recipe Calculator

Choose a mode from the tabs: Scale recipe, Baker's %, Hydration, Brine, Coffee ratio, or Pizza dough. Enter the visible values, select Calculate, and review the mode-specific result. Use Reset to restore that mode's starting values.

Scale a Recipe by Servings or Batch Weight

  1. In Scale by, choose Servings or Batch weight. Batch-weight scaling also shows Batch weight unit: grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb).
  2. Enter Original servings and Target servings, or the corresponding original and target batch weights.
  3. Use Add ingredient for each item. Enter its name, quantity, and Unit (label only). These unit labels are free text and are not converted.
  4. Select a Rounding policy, then choose Calculate.

The calculation uses one selected batch-weight unit for both batch weights. It then applies:

Scale factor = Target value / Original value

Scaled quantity = Original quantity x Scale factor

Choose a Rounding policy

Rounding policy offers No rounding (full precision), Nearest 0.1, Nearest 0.25, and Nearest whole number. Rounding changes only the displayed quantity. The scale factor and underlying calculation use full precision.

Calculate Baker's %, Dough Hydration, or Pizza Dough

For Baker's %, enter Flour weight (100% reference), choose Weight unit, and add the other ingredients with their weights. The calculation is:

Ingredient % = (Ingredient weight / Flour weight) x 100

For Hydration, enter Flour weight, Water weight, and Weight unit:

Hydration % = (Water weight / Flour weight) x 100

For both modes, Weight unit supports grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), and pounds (lb).

For Pizza dough, enter Number of dough balls, Dough ball weight (each), Weight unit, and the percentage fields for hydration, salt, yeast, oil, and sugar. The tool totals the dough weight, back-solves the flour weight, and derives the other weights from those percentages.

Use Brine concentration

Choose a value in Solve for: Concentration, Salt weight, or Water amount.

  • For Concentration, enter Water amount and Salt weight. Target concentration (%) is disabled.
  • For Salt weight, enter water and target concentration. Salt weight is disabled.
  • For Water amount, enter salt and target concentration. Water amount is disabled.

Water units include g, kg, oz, lb, mL, L, cup, qt, and gal. Salt units include g, kg, oz, and lb. Volume water units use the fresh-water density assumption of 1 g/mL. The result reports concentration as weight/weight:

Concentration % (w/w) = Salt weight / (Salt weight + Water weight) x 100

Use Coffee ratio

Choose Water amount, Coffee amount, or Ratio in Solve for. The selected answer field is hidden while the other two inputs remain available:

  • Water amount: enter coffee and Ratio N (1 : N).
  • Coffee amount: enter water and Ratio N (1 : N).
  • Ratio: enter coffee and water.

Unit supports only grams (g) and ounces (oz) for both displayed amounts. The formulas are Water = Coffee x N, Coffee = Water / N, and N = Water / Coffee. The tool performs this arithmetic in the selected unit; it does not convert grams of water to milliliters.

Review, copy, download, or print results

After Calculate, review the result table or statistics shown for that mode. Copy result creates a plain-text summary with the browser clipboard. If clipboard access fails, the page can show Could not copy - select and copy manually. Download result (.txt) saves the plain-text result. Scale recipe also provides Print table for its ingredient table.

Validation and calculation limits

Required inputs must be numeric. The checks depend on the mode:

  • Scale recipe: original and target values must be greater than zero; ingredient quantities may be zero or more.
  • Baker's %: flour weight must be positive; ingredient weights may be zero or more.
  • Hydration: flour weight must be positive; water weight may be zero.
  • Brine: the selected calculation needs a valid positive denominator; some entered values may be zero, and an entered concentration must be below 100.
  • Coffee ratio: values may be zero or more, but the selected calculation must have a valid denominator.
  • Pizza dough: the dough-ball count must be a positive whole number; other entered weights and percentages are nonnegative.

Scale recipe uses plain multiplication. It does not adjust nonlinear effects such as leavening, spice, or cook time.

What the calculator does not provide

  • Calories, macros, or other nutrition information.
  • Food-safety guidance, including brining times, temperatures, or storage limits.
  • Proofing, fermentation, or rising-time estimates.
  • Ingredient substitutions or replacement suggestions.

Privacy and local processing

The page performs calculations locally in your browser using the values you enter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does recipe scaling work in this calculator?

Choose Servings or Batch weight, enter the original and target values, add ingredients, and select Calculate. The calculator divides target by original, multiplies each quantity by that factor, and applies Rounding policy only to the displayed result. Ingredient unit labels are not converted.

What is the rounding policy and why does it matter?

The rounding policy controls how scaled quantities are displayed: full precision, nearest 0.1, nearest 0.25, or nearest whole number. Rounding is applied only to the number shown in the result table - the underlying scale factor and math are always computed at full precision, so switching rounding policy never compounds error across ingredients.

Does this tool calculate calories or nutrition?

No. This calculator performs quantity and ratio arithmetic only. It does not estimate calories, macros, or any other nutrition information.

Does this tool tell me if a recipe is food-safe or how long to proof dough?

No. It does not give food-safety guidance or estimate proofing, fermentation, or rising time. It only performs the arithmetic on the numbers you enter.

Can it substitute ingredients for me?

No. It never substitutes or suggests replacement ingredients automatically.

Why are baker's percentage, hydration, brine, coffee ratio, and pizza dough all in one tool?

They share a ratio or percentage-based calculation model. Each mode keeps its own controls, units, and result format, while allowing related calculations in one page.

Which units does the calculator support?

Scale recipe, Baker's %, Hydration, and Pizza dough use grams (g), kilograms (kg), ounces (oz), or pounds (lb). Brine supports those salt units plus water in g, kg, oz, lb, mL, L, cup, qt, or gal. Coffee ratio supports only grams (g) or ounces (oz).

Why is an input disabled or hidden?

In Brine, Solve for disables the value being calculated. In Coffee ratio, it hides the answer field and leaves the other two inputs visible.

What happens if Copy result cannot use the clipboard?

Copy result may show Could not copy - select and copy manually. if clipboard access fails. Download result (.txt) creates a plain-text file.
