Fraction Calculator

Simplify a fraction or mixed number to lowest terms, or add, subtract, multiply, and divide a chain of fractions and mixed numbers. Every mode shows the exact simplified fraction, a mixed number, a decimal equivalent, and every calculation step.

Enter a fraction (18/24), mixed number (2 4/6), decimal (2.5), or whole number. A leading minus or plus sign is allowed.

How to use the Fraction Calculator

  1. Choose Simplify a fraction or Fraction arithmetic.
  2. Enter a supported value. In arithmetic mode, use Add another term, then choose Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide.
  3. Click Calculate to see the result and steps.
  4. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to save the output.

Accepted values and calculation order

Enter values such as 7, 2.5, 3/4, or 1 3/4. A leading minus or plus sign is also accepted, such as -2/3 or +5.

Arithmetic terms are evaluated from left to right in the order you enter them. The calculator does not apply normal operator precedence across the chain, so each selected operation is applied at its step.

What the result shows

  • Results use exact integer-based fraction arithmetic and are reduced to lowest terms.
  • Simplify a fraction can show the GCD and reduction steps.
  • Fraction arithmetic shows each term, operation step, and running result.
  • The result can include a mixed number and a decimal equivalent. Repeating notation may be shown when detected; otherwise the decimal may be truncated to the display precision and followed by an ellipsis.

Use the exact simplified fraction as the authoritative result.

Errors and supported limits

The calculator rejects zero denominators, division by zero, and text that does not match a supported format. The error identifies the affected term and accepted formats. Fraction arithmetic supports up to eight terms.

This tool covers fraction simplification and fraction or mixed-number arithmetic. For ratio simplification or proportions, use the Fraction and Ratio Calculator. For equations with variables, use the Algebra Calculator.

Privacy and calculation processing

The fraction calculator parses and calculates entered values locally in your browser. The calculation workflow does not submit those values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What number formats does the fraction calculator accept?

Whole numbers (7), decimals (2.5), simple fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (1 3/4). A leading minus or plus sign is supported, e.g. -2/3 or +5.

Does this calculator round fraction results?

The fraction result is calculated exactly, so a result such as 7/12 is not rounded. The decimal display may use repeating notation when a repeat is detected; otherwise it can be truncated to the display precision and followed by an ellipsis.

How do I simplify a fraction to lowest terms?

Choose the Simplify a fraction mode, enter a fraction or mixed number like 18/24, and the calculator divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor to reach lowest terms, showing the GCD and each step.

Can I chain more than two fractions together?

Yes. Fraction arithmetic mode lets you add up to eight terms with a chosen operation between each pair, evaluated left to right, e.g. 1/2 + 1/3 - 1/6. Each running result is shown in lowest terms after every step.
