How to Use the Power Calculator
- Enter the work or energy and select its unit.
- Enter the time and select its unit.
- Click Calculate. After a successful calculation, the result section appears with the power and calculation steps.
- Click Reset to clear both input fields, restore Joules (J) and Seconds (s), clear errors, and hide the result.
Formula, Units, and Result
The calculator applies P = W / t. It converts non-SI inputs to joules and seconds before calculating watts.
- Work / energy: Joules (J), Kilojoules (kJ), Calories (cal), Kilocalories (kcal), Foot-pounds (ft·lb), Kilowatt-hours (kWh), or BTU.
- Time: Seconds (s), Milliseconds (ms), Minutes (min), Hours (h), or Days.
- Results: watts (W), kilowatts (kW), horsepower (hp), foot-pounds per second (ft·lb/s), and BTU per hour (BTU/h).
The steps show the given values, any needed conversions, the formula, and the calculated result.
Validation and Calculation Limits
Enter decimal numbers in the format accepted by the fields. Exponent notation such as 1e3, a leading plus sign, and comma-separated numbers are rejected. Work or energy must be zero or greater; time must be greater than zero.
Each raw work or energy and time input must not exceed 1e15. The calculated power must also remain finite. Empty, invalid, negative, zero-time, oversized, or non-finite calculations show an error and hide the result.
The result is average power over the entered interval. The calculator applies direct P = W / t arithmetic; it does not model efficiency losses or infer a missing value.
Copy or Download the Calculation
After a successful calculation, click Copy result to copy the generated plain-text result when clipboard access succeeds. If copying fails, the tool displays “Could not copy - select and copy manually.” The generated text is kept in a hidden field, so use Download result (.txt) as the available fallback. The download contains the result and calculation steps, with the filename power-calculator-result.txt.
Privacy and Implementation Scope
The calculation script performs the arithmetic locally in your browser and does not send the values you enter. The page itself also loads external resources and includes other page features, so this statement applies to the calculator code only.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula for power?
Power equals work or energy divided by the time over which it is transferred: P = W / t. This is the basic definition of power - the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
What units does this calculator support?
Work or energy can be entered in joules, kilojoules, calories, kilocalories, foot-pounds, kilowatt-hours, or BTU. Time can be entered in seconds, milliseconds, minutes, hours, or days. The result is shown in watts, kilowatts, horsepower, foot-pounds per second, and BTU per hour.
Can work or time be negative or zero in this calculator?
Work or energy must be zero or a positive number, since this calculator finds the magnitude of power transferred. Time must be strictly greater than zero, since power is undefined when no time has elapsed.
What is the difference between work, energy, and power?
Work and energy are measured in the same units (joules) and represent a quantity of energy transferred or transformed. Power is the rate at which that work or energy is transferred over time, measured in watts (joules per second).
Does this calculator account for efficiency losses?
No. This calculator applies the direct definition P = W/t to the work or energy and time you provide. It does not model mechanical, electrical, or thermal efficiency losses, and does not infer any missing value.
