Audio Recorder

Record microphone audio directly in your browser and create a brand-new audio file from that session - with device selection, a live input meter, record/pause/resume, an elapsed-time display, optional trim before export, and a choice of format and quality. Nothing is uploaded, and your microphone is never accessed without your explicit action.

This tool records a new file from a live microphone session. To edit pitch, tempo, fades or reverse on an existing file, use Audio Effects Editor instead.

Microphone access

Not enabled yet - no audio is being captured.

What this tool does

Create a new audio file from a live microphone session. The recorder provides Input device, Input level, Recording format, Quality, Record, Pause, Resume, Stop, Trim before export, and Download controls.

Recording, input metering, trimming, and encoding run in the browser. The tool does not transcribe speech or perform content analysis, although it does meter the incoming audio.

Enable the microphone and check Input level

Click Enable microphone and approve the browser permission prompt. Access is not requested before this action. If permission is denied or the microphone is unavailable, recording cannot start.

After permission is granted, choose an Input device and check Input level. The number is an approximate RMS level in dB. The separate marker shows a held approximate peak. Switching devices restarts monitoring and stops an active recording.

Record, pause, resume, and elapsed time

Click Record to start capture. Pause stops adding audio to the recording; the microphone stream and Input level meter can remain active. Click Resume to continue. The elapsed time excludes pauses.

Click Stop to finalize the take. Monitoring may continue after stopping until you switch devices or leave the page.

Choose Recording format and Quality

Choose Recording format before recording. Compressed options use a codec supported by the browser, so available formats and output details can vary. Quality controls the compressed recording bitrate when applicable.

WAV records through the browser's supported format first, then decodes and re-encodes the audio as uncompressed 16-bit PCM WAV when you export it. Quality is disabled and ignored for WAV. Compressed output is not guaranteed to be lossless or identical across browsers.

Preview, Trim before export, and Download

After Stop, preview the recording in the player. Enable Trim before export to use the waveform handles or enter Start and End seconds. The selected points must keep a small minimum separation.

Trimming decodes the recording and exports the selected region as lossless WAV, regardless of the chosen recording format. WAV export and trimming can fail if the browser cannot decode the recording. Click Download to save the resulting file locally.

How to use the Audio Recorder

  1. Click Enable microphone and approve permission.
  2. Choose an Input device and check Input level.
  3. Choose a Recording format and, when enabled, set Quality.
  4. Click Record. Use Pause and Resume if needed.
  5. Click Stop and preview the take.
  6. Optionally enable Trim before export, then click Download.

Limitations and troubleshooting

The recorder requires the MediaDevices and MediaRecorder APIs and a secure context: HTTPS or localhost. The page reports unsupported browser conditions; current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 14.1+ are suggested. Private or incognito windows may restrict microphone access.

  • If access is denied or unavailable, check browser and operating-system microphone permissions.
  • If no input devices are found, connect or enable a microphone and try again.
  • If switching devices fails, select another available device and enable the microphone again.
  • If decoding fails, trimming and WAV export are unavailable for that recording in the current browser.

Privacy and local processing

The page has no upload step. It processes the take in the browser and creates the resulting file when you click Download.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool access my microphone automatically?

No. Nothing touches your microphone until you click "Enable microphone", which triggers your browser's own permission prompt. If you deny or ignore it, no audio is captured.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording, metering, trimming, and encoding happen in your browser, and no upload is implemented. The resulting file is saved locally when you click Download.

Is the recording lossless?

WAV export and trimmed export are uncompressed 16-bit PCM. Compressed recording uses a browser-supported codec, so its format and losslessness vary by browser. Quality is ignored when WAV is selected.

Does this tool transcribe my recording?

No. It does not transcribe speech or perform content analysis. It does use audio metering to show the input level.
