EXIF Viewer

Read the EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP metadata embedded in a local image - camera, lens, capture time, dimensions, orientation, GPS, software, copyright and raw tag identifiers. Everything runs in your browser; your file is never uploaded or modified.

What this tool reads

EXIF Viewer reads embedded EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP metadata from a selected image and displays the values it can parse. It processes the image locally in your browser and does not add, guess, verify, modify, strip, or re-encode metadata.

Supported formats and metadata

The interface lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF and HEIC. JPEG and TIFF use TIFF-structured EXIF data. PNG can contain eXIf and tEXt, iTXt, or zTXt chunks. WebP can contain EXIF and XMP, HEIC/HEIF EXIF is parsed, and JPEG may also contain IPTC and XMP data.

Summary details and dimensions

Summary cards may show camera make and model, lens, capture timestamp, dimensions, orientation, software, and copyright. Missing fields display as "Not present". Dimensions are read from JPEG, PNG, and WebP format data; when needed, the preview image's natural dimensions are used as a fallback.

GPS warning and external map link

When GPS coordinates are present, a warning can show latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp. Review these values before sharing the image. The exact link is View location on OpenStreetMap; clicking it sends the displayed coordinates to that external site. The viewer does not remove or edit GPS data.

Search, groups and raw identifiers

Tags are grouped by source. Search by tag name, ID, or value to filter the results. Each result can show a readable name, a raw identifier such as 0x829a, and a formatted value. Unrecognized tags remain visible under their raw identifiers. Compressed PNG iTXt and zTXt values are shown as not decoded.

Exporting results

Use Export JSON for the file summary, decoded GPS object, and flat tag list. Use Export CSV for a table containing each tag's group, tag ID, tag name, and value.

How to view image metadata

  1. Drop one image onto the drop zone, or click browse files.
  2. Review the summary cards and any GPS warning.
  3. Search by tag name, ID, or value, or review the grouped results.
  4. Use Export JSON or Export CSV if you need a report.

Limitations and file-reading failures

  • The viewer reports only metadata it can parse. Missing values may appear as "Not present", or the page may show "No EXIF, GPS, IPTC or XMP metadata was found in this file."
  • Unsupported or malformed files may be treated as an unknown format and produce no rows, which can lead to the same no-metadata message.
  • A FileReader failure displays "Could not read this file."
  • The tool does not verify authenticity, detect tampering, or scan the file for malware.
  • PNG compressed iTXt and zTXt text is displayed as not decoded.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my image anywhere?

The image file is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded by this tool. If you click View location on OpenStreetMap, the displayed coordinates are sent to that external site.

Does it modify my file?

No. EXIF Viewer only reads and displays metadata; it never writes, strips, or re-encodes the source file.

Why do I see "Not present" or no metadata?

The file may not contain those fields, or an unsupported or malformed file may have produced no parsed rows. Screenshots and web-exported images may also have metadata stripped.

Can I use this to prove a photo is authentic or unedited?

No. Metadata can be edited or removed, so its presence or absence does not prove authenticity.

What happens if the file cannot be read?

A FileReader failure displays "Could not read this file." Unsupported or malformed files can instead appear to have no metadata.

How do I remove GPS or other metadata before sharing a photo?

Use a dedicated metadata remover tool. This viewer is read-only and does not change the source file.
