Serial Number Extractor: Find Serial and Product Numbers in Text
Paste text or load a supported text file to find labeled values, grouped keys, and generic alphanumeric serials. The tool updates matches as you edit the input, then shows each value with its pattern, line number, and context. It detects shapes only; it does not validate codes against manufacturer, vendor, or warranty databases.
Choose the Matching Controls
Enable the categories that fit the values you expect. The tool checks them in this order: labeled, grouped, then generic. When matches overlap, the earlier category keeps the span.
- Labeled (S/N, Serial No, Model, P/N) finds a
4-30-character alphanumeric or hyphenated value after a supported label. The matcher recognizes S/N, SN, Serial, Serial No, Serial Number, Model, Model No, Model Number, Part, Part No, Part Number, and P/N, including the supported#or period forms for No labels. - Grouped keys (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) finds
3-8groups of4-6alphanumeric characters separated by hyphens. - Generic alphanumeric serials finds an
8-24-character value containing at least one letter and one digit. Internal hyphens are allowed. - Unique only removes repeated values case-insensitively. It compares uppercase versions of the matches.
Changing the input or any checkbox updates the results automatically.
Extract Serial Numbers
- Paste text into the input area, or select Upload to open a file picker. The picker accepts
.txt,.csv,.json, and.logfiles, which are read as text. - You can also drag a file onto the input area. The page reads the dropped file as text.
- Enable or disable the matching categories. Keep Unique only enabled to remove repeated values, or disable it to preserve every repeated match.
Review, Copy, or Download the Results
The output box contains only newline-separated matched values. The results table provides more detail for each match: serial value, pattern, line number, and a short surrounding context snippet. Line numbers use the newline-separated input.
- Select Copy to copy the output box contents when it is not empty.
- Select Download to save the newline-separated values as
serial-numbers.txt.
Understand Matching Limits
This tool performs pattern-based detection only. Disabled categories produce no matches for their shapes. The output box remains available, while the results table is hidden when the current extraction has no matches.
Broad patterns can return false positives or miss vendor-specific formats. The tool has no manufacturer, vendor, or warranty lookup, validation, or custom pattern control. For a user-defined regular expression, use the Custom Regex Extractor.
Processing and Privacy Scope
This page's tool script reads pasted input and selected or dropped files in the browser, then applies its matching logic locally. The tool-specific script contains no upload request. No local input-size limit is documented, so avoid assuming a maximum file size or guaranteed performance for very large files.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What counts as a "serial number" for this tool?
There is no single universal serial number format, so this tool looks for three common shapes: codes explicitly labeled with S/N, SN, Serial, Serial No, Serial Number, Model, Model No, Model Number, Part, Part No, Part Number, or P/N; the label matcher also accepts optional # or period forms for No labels; dash-grouped license/product keys such as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX; and unlabeled alphanumeric strings that mix letters and digits. Each shape can be toggled on or off independently.
Can I match a serial format specific to my company or product line?
This tool targets common, widely-seen serial and product-number shapes. For a format defined by your own regular expression, use the Custom Regex Extractor instead, which lets you supply any pattern.
Why can the tool return a false positive or miss a code?
This extractor uses broad pattern matching rather than manufacturer-specific validation. A value can look like a serial without being one, and a vendor-specific format may not match the built-in length or character rules. Check the enabled categories and use the Custom Regex Extractor for a defined custom format.
How does the tool avoid double-counting the same code?
Matches are checked against every category in priority order (labeled first, then grouped keys, then generic). Once a span of text is claimed by one match, it can't also be reported by another category. This prevents overlapping matches from being listed twice under different types, but repeated occurrences remain when Unique only is disabled. When Unique only is enabled, the first occurrence is kept after case-insensitive comparison and later duplicates are removed.
