Use the UUID Extractor
Paste text into the input area or load a file to find UUID-shaped values. The tool uses regular expressions to match hyphenated hexadecimal strings in the 8-4-4-4-12 pattern: bare UUIDs, curly-braced UUIDs, and urn:uuid: values. Bare matches are always included; the other two forms have separate controls.
This is syntax detection. The reported fields do not verify where a UUID came from, how it was generated, or whether it exists in a database or system.
Extract UUIDs from text or a file
- Replace the sample text in the input area, or paste in your own content.
- To load a file, select Upload. The picker supplies
.txt,.csv,.json,.log,.html, and.htmas a file-type hint; the selected file is read into the input area. - To drag a file, drop it onto the input area or its wrapper; the shared upload hint and highlight identify the drop target.
- Review the results. They update automatically when the text or any checkbox setting changes.
Choose matching and cleanup options
- Unique only collapses repeated UUIDs case-insensitively after removing braces and the
urn:uuid:prefix for comparison. Only the retained occurrence's line and context are shown. - Curly-braced format includes matches wrapped in braces. The always-enabled bare pattern can also match the UUID inside the braces.
- urn:uuid: format includes matches with the
urn:uuid:prefix. The bare pattern can also match the UUID after that prefix. - With Unique only off, one braced or URN value can therefore produce both a nested bare match and a formatted match. With it on, only one occurrence is retained.
- Include nil UUID includes the all-zero value
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000. - Strip braces/prefix removes braces and the
urn:uuid:prefix from displayed values. - Uppercase changes displayed UUID values to uppercase. With it off, displayed values are lowercase.
Review, copy, or download the results
The results table shows UUID, Format, Version, Variant, Line, and Context. The Version value is derived from the first character of the third group and may be v1 through v8, Nil, or Unknown. Variant is a classification reported from characters at fixed positions in the matched syntax; it does not prove generation provenance.
The output area contains a newline-separated list of the displayed UUID values. Select Copy to copy that list, or Download to save it as the plain-text file uuids.txt.
Confirmed limitations
- File reading and extraction are implemented in the browser. The local tool script contains no request that submits the input text.
- The tool does not generate UUIDs or check database or system records.
- No maximum file size, text-encoding policy, or browser-support matrix is documented.
- Empty output keeps Copy and Download disabled. The shared upload and output controls report file-read and clipboard failures with a retry or manual-copy path.
- Matching can identify a UUID-shaped substring inside surrounding text; it does not validate that the match is a complete identifier field.
UUID Extractor FAQ
What UUID formats does this tool recognize?
It matches the bare hyphenated form with 8-4-4-4-12 hexadecimal characters. Curly-braced and urn:uuid: forms can be enabled independently with their checkboxes.
What does the version column mean?
It reports the first character of the third group as v1 through v8. The all-zero value is shown as Nil; other values are shown as Unknown. This reports the matched characters and does not verify how the UUID was generated.
What does the variant column mean?
It reports a classification derived from characters at fixed positions in the fourth group. The script can display RFC 4122, NCS, Microsoft, Reserved, or - for the nil UUID.
Why is this separate from a general text or ID extractor?
The matching rules target UUID-shaped values and their three supported notations. The tool reports UUID-specific fields and does not validate provenance or check external records.
