How to Use the Commission Calculator
Enter the values from one commission period, then select Calculate. The result stays hidden until the entries pass validation and shows commission by tier, total pay, quota attainment, and the inputs used.
- Enter Total sales for the period ($) and Sales quota for the period ($).
- Enter Tier 1 rate: up to quota (%) and the required Tier 2 rate: above quota (%).
- For a third tier, enter Accelerator threshold (% of quota, optional) and Tier 3 rate: above accelerator threshold (%, optional) together.
- Optionally enter Base salary / draw for the period ($, optional) to include it in total pay.
- Select Calculate.
Inputs and Tier Setup
- Sales quota is the Tier 1 boundary and the reference value for quota attainment.
- Tier 1 rate applies to sales up to quota. Tier 2 rate applies above quota and is required.
- The accelerator threshold marks where Tier 3 begins. It must be greater than 100% of quota.
- Enter the accelerator threshold and Tier 3 rate as a pair. Leave both blank for two tiers.
- Base salary / draw is added to commission for Total pay; it is not used to calculate a rate.
- Use the same period for sales, quota, and base salary or draw. Enter rates as percentages, such as
8for 8%.
How Commission Is Split Across Tiers
The calculator uses marginal, bracket-style tiering. Each rate applies only to the sales inside its own band. Without an accelerator threshold, Tier 2 covers all sales above quota. With one, Tier 2 runs from quota to the threshold amount and Tier 3 covers sales above that amount.
Formula Used
Let S be total sales, Q be quota, and A be the accelerator percentage.
Accelerator threshold amount = Q x (A / 100)
Tier 1 sales = min(S, Q); Tier 1 commission = Tier 1 sales x (R1 / 100)
With no accelerator: Tier 2 sales = max(S - Q, 0) and Tier 3 sales = 0.
With an accelerator: Tier 2 sales = min(max(S - Q, 0), Accelerator threshold amount - Q); Tier 3 sales = max(S - Accelerator threshold amount, 0).
Each tier commission equals its tier sales multiplied by its rate divided by 100. Total commission = Tier 1 commission + Tier 2 commission + Tier 3 commission; Total pay = Base salary / draw + Total commission.
For a no-accelerator example, $120,000 in sales against a $100,000 quota at 5% for Tier 1 and 8% for Tier 2 gives $5,000 + $1,600 = $6,600 total commission.
Validation, Errors, and Reset
Total sales and Sales quota must be greater than 0. Tier 1 and Tier 2 rates must be entered and fall between 0 and 100. An accelerator threshold must be greater than 100% of quota, and its Tier 3 rate must be supplied with it. An entered base salary or draw must be 0 or greater. A failed check shows a specific error and hides the result. Select Reset to clear the fields, hide the result, and clear displayed errors.
Reading the Result
After a successful calculation, the headline figures show Total commission, Total pay (base + commission), and Quota attainment. The Tier breakdown table shows each sales range, rate, sales in the tier, and commission. The assumptions table lists inputs and intermediate values. Displayed currency uses two decimal places, rates use two decimal places, and quota attainment uses one decimal place.

Limitations and Calculator Privacy
This is a mathematical estimate based on entered values, not an official commission statement. It does not fetch live CRM data, payroll records, or account information. It also does not model payout caps, clawbacks or chargebacks, draw recovery, deal-specific rates, team-based quotas, ramp schedules, or the timing and rounding rules in a written plan.
The calculator script performs calculations from the values you enter and contains no calculator-data network request. This statement applies to calculator inputs; the page also has a separate subscription form.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this calculator split commission across tiers?
It uses marginal (bracket-style) tiering, the same way a tax bracket works. Sales up to your quota earn the base rate, sales between quota and your accelerator threshold earn the above-quota rate, and any sales above the accelerator threshold earn the accelerator rate. Each rate only applies to the slice of sales that falls in its band, not to your entire sales total.
What if my plan pays one flat rate on all sales instead of tiers?
Set the above-quota rate equal to your base rate and leave the accelerator threshold blank. Every dollar of sales will then be calculated at the same rate, which reproduces a simple flat-rate commission.
Does this calculator pull my real sales or payroll data?
No. It only uses the sales amount, quota, base pay, and rates you type in. It does not fetch live CRM data, payroll records, or account information, and it is not personalized financial or compensation advice.
Why might my actual commission payout differ from this estimate?
Real commission plans can include caps on payout, clawbacks for cancelled or refunded deals, draw recovery, deal-type or product-specific rates, team versus individual quotas, ramp periods for new hires, and rounding or timing rules this calculator does not model. Always confirm figures against your written compensation plan.
Is a sales quota the same as a commission tier threshold?
Not exactly. The quota is the sales target used as the reference point for attainment. Tier thresholds are commonly expressed as a percentage of that quota (for example, 100% of quota or 150% of quota) and mark where a different commission rate begins to apply.
