What This Tool Does
Use the calculator to set an emergency-fund target from your essential monthly expenses and target months. It shows the target, amount still needed, current-savings progress, and an optional time estimate based on your planned contribution.
Enter Your Emergency-Fund Details
- Enter Essential monthly expenses ($) for necessary recurring costs such as housing, utilities, food, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments.
- Choose Stable, Variable, or Unstable. The selection sets Target months to 3, 6, or 9, replacing its current value. You can then edit it.
- Keep Target months between 1 and 36.
- Optionally enter Current emergency savings ($). A blank field is treated as $0.
- Optionally enter Planned monthly contribution ($). A blank or zero value skips the time estimate.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your essential monthly expenses.
- Choose an income stability option, or edit Target months directly.
- Add current savings and a planned contribution if you want to include them.
- Click Calculate.
- Review the result, assumptions table, and progress display.
Understand the Results
The calculator uses these formulas:
Emergency fund target = Essential monthly expenses x Target monthsAmount still needed = max(0, Target - Current emergency savings)Months to reach target = Amount still needed / Planned monthly contribution
The remaining amount cannot fall below zero. Progress is capped at 100%; savings at or above the target show Target already met. If Planned monthly contribution is greater than 0 and the target is not met, the calculator displays the time estimate rounded up to a whole month. Blank or zero contribution shows Not entered in the assumptions table and produces no estimate.
The calculation assumes no interest. The assumptions table lists the entered values and intermediate results.
Validation and Limitations
Essential monthly expenses must be greater than 0. Target months must be greater than 0 and no more than 36. Optional savings and contribution values must be 0 or greater when entered. The estimate does not model interest, changing expenses, changing contributions, or irregular costs outside the figures you enter.

Privacy and Calculation Scope
The calculator script performs the arithmetic locally and does not submit the values entered into this calculator through that script. The page also includes site-level analytics and a separate subscription form, so this statement does not cover every page interaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should be in an emergency fund?
A commonly cited general guideline is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses, with more (often 6 to 9 months or more) suggested for less stable or variable income. This calculator uses the target number of months you choose, with a suggested starting point based on the income stability option you select.
What counts as a monthly expense for this calculator?
Use your essential, recurring monthly costs: housing, utilities, food, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments. Discretionary spending such as entertainment or dining out is generally excluded, since the fund is meant to cover necessities during a loss of income.
How does income stability affect the target?
Selecting an income stability option fills in a suggested target number of months - 3 for stable income, 6 for variable income, or 9 for unstable income - as a general starting point. You can change the target months field to any value; the stability selection does not lock the number.
How is the time to reach the target calculated?
If Planned monthly contribution is greater than 0, the calculator divides the amount still needed (target minus current savings) by that contribution to estimate the number of months required, assuming a constant contribution with no interest. A blank or zero contribution produces no time estimate.
Does this tool give personalized financial advice?
