How to use the Savings Goal Calculator
Use the calculator to find a level monthly contribution that can reach or exceed your target under the figures and assumptions you enter.
- Enter Target amount ($).
- Optionally enter Current savings toward this goal ($). Leave it blank to use $0.
- Optionally enter Expected annual rate of return (%). Leave it blank to use 0%.
- Choose Target date or Number of months, then provide the matching deadline value.
- Click Calculate to display the result.
Choose a deadline
Target date uses today's date from your browser and converts the selected date to whole months using the calculator's calendar-date logic. The result is rounded up to at least one month.
With Number of months, enter a positive value. Decimal values are rounded up to the next whole month, and values above 1200 months are rejected.
How the calculation works
The calculator divides the annual rate by 12, then compounds current savings monthly:
Monthly rate = Annual rate / 12
Future value of current savings = Current savings x (1 + Monthly rate)^Months
It subtracts that future value from the target and floors the amount needed from contributions at zero:
Amount needed from contributions = max(0, Target amount - Future value of current savings)
When the monthly rate is above 0%, the required level contribution uses an ordinary-annuity formula for end-of-month payments. At 0%, it divides the remaining amount by the number of months.
Required monthly contribution = Amount needed x Monthly rate / ((1 + Monthly rate)^Months - 1)
Required monthly contribution = Amount needed / Months when the rate is 0%.
If projected current-savings growth already covers the target, the required contribution is $0 and the projected balance can exceed the target.
Read the result
The result section appears after a successful calculation and is hidden again after an error or reset. Its headline stats show Required monthly contribution, Months until deadline, and Projected balance at deadline.
Formula used shows the formulas. The assumptions table lists the future value of current savings, amount needed from contributions, required monthly contribution, total contributed, total growth earned, and projected balance, along with the entered values. It does not show separate growth lines for current savings and contributions.
Validation and calculation limits
- Target amount ($) must be greater than 0.
- Current savings toward this goal ($) must be 0 or greater and cannot exceed the target amount.
- Expected annual rate of return (%) must be between 0% and 100%.
- The deadline must be in the future or produce at least one month.
- The calculator shows a general text error in
#errorBoxand hides the result section. It does not focus or highlight a specific field. - Direct month input is rounded up and cannot exceed
1200months.
Assumptions and limitations
- Growth is compounded monthly.
- Contributions are level and made at the end of each month.
- The projection assumes no missed or extra payments.
- It excludes taxes, fees, inflation, and withdrawals.
- It uses your entered figures and does not fetch live rates, bank balances, or external financial records.
- The result is a mathematical projection, not personalized financial advice.

Privacy and page data handling
The calculator script performs the calculation in your browser using the entered calculator values and does not submit those values to a server. Other page features use their own services, so this does not mean that no data anywhere on the page is sent to a server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the required monthly contribution calculated?
The calculator first grows your current savings at the expected monthly rate to the deadline, then finds the level end-of-month contribution needed to make up the remaining gap, using the standard future-value-of-an-annuity formula. If the expected rate is 0%, it simply divides the remaining gap by the number of months.
What compounding convention does this calculator use?
The annual rate you enter is converted to a monthly rate by dividing by 12, compounding is applied monthly, and contributions are assumed to be made at the end of each month (an ordinary annuity).
Can I enter a target date instead of a number of months?
Yes. Choose the target date option and pick a date; the calculator converts it to a whole number of months from today, rounding up so the deadline is always met.
What does the target-date projection show?
It shows the projected account balance at the deadline if you make the calculated level contribution at the end of each month. The assumptions table lists the future value of current savings, total contributed, and combined total growth; the balance can reach or exceed the target.
Does this tool give personalized financial advice?
No. This tool performs a mathematical projection using only the figures you type in. It does not access live interest rates, bank balances, or any external records, and it does not provide personalized financial advice.
