FIRE Calculator

Calculate your financial-independence (FIRE) target and an estimated FI year from your current invested savings, annual spending, annual contributions, expected investment return, and safe withdrawal rate. See the formula, every assumption, intermediate values, and a copyable or downloadable result.

Only used to also show an estimated age at financial independence.

Investable assets only - retirement and brokerage accounts, not home equity or emergency cash.

Expected annual spending in financial independence, entered as a static figure in the same dollar basis as your other inputs. No automatic inflation adjustment is applied.

Required. Enter the total amount you add to invested savings each year; enter 0 if you do not contribute. Added at year end in the projection.

A single nominal annual return, compounded once per year. Not fetched from any market data source.

The percentage of your portfolio you plan to withdraw each year in financial independence. 4% is a commonly cited starting point.

Enter the required values

Complete the five required fields, then click Calculate. Only Current age (optional) may be left blank.

Enter Your Savings, Spending, and Assumptions

  • Current age (optional): leave it blank or enter a value from 10 to 100. It is used only for the estimated FI age.
  • Current invested savings ($): enter investable assets such as retirement and brokerage accounts. Exclude home equity and emergency cash.
  • Annual spending ($): enter expected annual spending in financial independence.
  • Annual contribution to savings ($) (required; enter 0 if none): enter the amount added each year.
  • Expected annual investment return (%): enter 0% to 30%.
  • Safe withdrawal rate (%): enter 0.1% to 20%. The field defaults to 4%.

How the FIRE Calculation Works

The calculator uses these formulas:

  • FIRE number = Annual spending / Safe withdrawal rate
  • Amount still needed = max(0, FIRE number - Current invested savings)
  • Balance(next year) = Balance x (1 + Expected annual return) + Annual contribution

The balance compounds once per year, and the contribution is added at the end of each year. The first simulated year in which the balance reaches or exceeds the FIRE number becomes the years-to-FI result. Spending, contributions, and returns stay constant; the calculation does not adjust them for inflation.

Read the Result and Projection

The Estimated FI year uses the current calendar year from your browser date.

The progress display shows the percentage of the FIRE number funded by current savings, capped at 100%. The assumptions table lists the entered values and intermediate results.

  • If current savings meet or exceed the FIRE number, Years to FI shows Already reached, the result uses 0 years, the current calendar year is the estimated FI year, and the schedule is hidden.
  • If the target is not reached, Years to FI shows Not reached within 100 years.
  • When a schedule is available, its columns are Calendar year, Years from now, and Projected balance. It shows at most the first 40 simulated years and adds a Showing first 40 of … simulated years row when more rows exist.

Calculate, Reset, Copy, or Download

  1. Enter Current invested savings ($), Annual spending ($), Annual contribution to savings ($) (required; enter 0 if none), Expected annual investment return (%), and Safe withdrawal rate (%). Enter Current age (optional) only if you want an estimated FI age.
  2. Click Calculate to validate the fields and show the result.
  3. Click Copy result to attempt to copy the plain-text summary. If copying fails, the tool displays Could not copy - select and copy manually. Select the generated text and copy it yourself.
  4. Click Download result (.txt) to save the same summary as fire-calculator-result.txt.
  5. Click Reset to clear the inputs, restore the safe withdrawal rate to 4, hide the result, and clear errors and status text.

Validation and Projection Limits

Current invested savings and annual contribution to savings must be 0 or greater and no more than 1e12. Annual spending must be greater than 0 and no more than 1e12. Expected annual investment return must be 0% to 30%, safe withdrawal rate 0.1% to 20%, and current age, when entered, 10 to 100.

The simulation stops after 100 years. It does not model inflation, taxes, market volatility, sequence-of-return risk, Social Security, other future income, or changes to spending, income, returns, or contributions. It uses the entered figures and does not fetch live market data, account balances, or external financial records.

Privacy and Scope

The calculator script performs these calculations locally in your browser and does not upload or fetch the calculator field values. The page also contains analytics and a subscription form, so this statement applies to the calculator fields only. The output is a mathematical projection, not personalized financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FIRE number?

A FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) number is the amount of invested savings needed so that a chosen withdrawal rate covers your annual spending indefinitely. This calculator computes it as annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate.

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

A safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of a portfolio you plan to withdraw each year in retirement. A commonly referenced starting point is 4%, based on historical research, but it is not guaranteed and you can enter any rate you prefer to test.

How is the estimated FI year calculated?

The calculator simulates your balance year by year: each year it multiplies the balance by (1 + your expected return) and adds your annual contribution, checking whether the balance has reached the FIRE number. The first year it does is used as the years-to-FI estimate, added to the current calendar year and, if entered, your current age.

Does this account for inflation?

No. The calculator uses the annual spending, contribution, and return figures exactly as entered, with no automatic inflation adjustment. To model inflation, enter a real return rate and spending figure in the same real-dollar basis.

Does this tool give personalized financial advice?

No. This tool performs a mathematical projection using only the figures you type in. It does not access live market data, account balances, or any external records, and it does not provide personalized financial advice.
