How to Use the Tip Calculator
Enter the bill details, choose how to calculate the tip, then select Calculate.
- Enter a bill amount greater than 0 and no more than 1,000,000.
- Optionally enter tax from 0 through the bill amount.
- Choose a preset tip percentage or enter a custom percentage from 0 to 100.
- Use Tip calculated on to choose Bill amount before tax or Bill amount including tax.
- Optionally enter a whole-number Split between (people, optional) value from 1 to 100.
- Optionally select Round total up to the next whole dollar, then select Calculate.
What the Calculator Calculates
The bill amount is treated as the full amount entered. With Bill amount before tax, the tip base is the bill amount minus the optional tax. With Bill amount including tax, the tip base is the full bill amount.
The calculator applies the selected percentage to that base, then adds the tip to the bill amount:
Tip amount = Tip base x (Tip percentage / 100)Total bill = Bill amount + Tip amountPer-person amount = Total / Number of people
If rounding is enabled, the script first sets Total = Math.ceil(Total), then derives the displayed tip as rounded total - bill amount. This can change the tip from the unrounded calculation.
Review, Copy, or Download the Result
After calculation, the result shows the tip amount and total bill. Per-person figures appear only when the people count is greater than 1. The assumptions table shows the applicable rows; tax rows appear when tax is greater than zero, and people rows appear when the count is greater than 1.
Use Copy result to copy a plain-text result summary. Use Download result (.txt) to save that summary as a .txt file. The summary also omits tax fields when tax is zero and the people count when it is 1. Currency values are displayed to two decimal places.
Input Limits and Other Limitations
- The bill amount must be greater than 0 and no more than 1,000,000.
- Tax must be from 0 through the bill amount.
- The tip percentage must be from 0 through 100.
- The people count must be a whole number from 1 through 100.
- The split is even and does not account for different orders.
- The calculator does not detect or remove a service charge already included in the bill.
Privacy and Page-Level Data Handling
The calculator calculations run in the local script.js logic. This does not establish a page-wide no-transmission guarantee: the page also loads Ahrefs and Google Analytics code and includes a subscription form that posts to /assets/subscribe.php.
Tip Calculator Questions
How is a tip calculated?
The tip amount equals the tip base (the bill amount, either before or after tax depending on your choice) multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total bill is the original bill amount plus the tip amount unless you enable rounding.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Use Tip calculated on to choose the calculation basis. The default is Bill amount before tax; you can switch to Bill amount including tax.
How does splitting the bill work?
If you enter a number of people greater than 1, the calculator divides the total tip and total bill evenly across that many people to show a per-person tip and per-person total. It does not account for people ordering different amounts - it assumes an even split.
What does rounding the total up do?
If enabled, the calculator rounds the total bill up with Math.ceil and sets the displayed tip to the rounded total minus the bill amount. This can change the tip amount.
What appears in the copied or downloaded result?
Copy result and Download result (.txt) use a plain-text result summary. Tax fields are included when tax is greater than zero, and people fields are included when the count is greater than 1.
