Mixed Number Calculator

Calculate with mixed numbers, fractions, and whole numbers.

Use the Mixed Number Calculator

Calculate one operation between exactly two numbers. The calculator supports addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, then shows the result as an improper fraction, mixed number, decimal, and calculation steps.

Enter a Number and Choose an Operation

Use the controls First number, Operation, and Second number. Enter either field as one of these formats:

  • Mixed number: 1 3/4
  • Slash-form fraction: a proper fraction such as 2/3 or an improper fraction such as 7/4
  • Whole number: 5
  • Negative value: add a leading minus sign, such as -2/3

Decimal input such as 2.5 is not accepted. In a mixed number, the fractional numerator must be nonzero and less than its own denominator. For example, 2 5/4 is rejected; enter it as a slash-form fraction instead.

Calculate, Read, and Save the Result

  1. Enter values in First number and Second number.
  2. Choose Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide from Operation.
  3. Click Calculate. The result section appears only after a successful calculation.
  4. Read the Improper fraction, Mixed number, and Decimal values. The Steps list shows input interpretation, conversions, common-denominator work for addition or subtraction, arithmetic, simplification, and final forms.
  5. Use Copy result to copy the generated plain text, or use Download result (.txt) to save it.

Click Reset to clear both inputs, restore Add, clear errors, and hide the result.

Understand the Exact Fraction and Decimal Displays

The calculator uses reduced integer fractions for its calculations. The Improper fraction and Mixed number forms represent the exact calculated value. The Decimal is a displayed equivalent: repeating cycles may use notation such as 0.(3). If a non-terminating cycle is not detected during the 28-digit scan, the display is truncated to eight digits and followed by an ellipsis.

Errors and Scope Limits

Zero denominators, invalid mixed numbers, and division by zero are rejected. Other invalid text produces an error that identifies the affected field and lists accepted formats. The calculator handles exactly two numbers at a time. Use the Fraction Calculator for decimal inputs, single-fraction simplification, or chains with more than two terms.

Calculation Privacy

Parsing and arithmetic for the entered values happen locally in the browser. This page also loads analytics and includes a subscription form, so this statement applies to the calculator’s calculation process, not to every page-level data flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you add or subtract mixed numbers?

Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction, rewrite both fractions over their least common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. The result is converted back to a mixed number and simplified to lowest terms. This calculator shows every one of those steps.

What is the difference between a mixed number and an improper fraction?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 1 3/4. An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator, such as 7/4. A proper fraction, such as 2/3, has a smaller numerator. The calculator accepts both slash-form types.

What number formats can I enter?

Both fields accept a mixed number (1 3/4), a proper or improper slash-form fraction such as 2/3 or 7/4, or a whole number (5), in any combination. A leading minus sign is allowed; decimal input is not.

Does this calculator round the result?

The fraction forms are exact. The decimal is a displayed equivalent: repeating cycles may use notation such as 0.(3), while a cycle not detected during the scan may be truncated to eight digits and followed by an ellipsis.
