Golf Handicap Calculator

Enter the score, course rating, and slope rating for at least 3 rounds to get an unofficial handicap index estimate, with the formula and every round's differential shown before the result.

Handicap index estimate (unofficial)

Enter score, course rating, and slope rating for at least 3 rounds. This produces an unofficial estimate only - it does not submit anything, certify an official handicap, or look up any course.

How to Use the Golf Handicap Calculator

What is a Golf Handicap Calculator? It is a browser-based tool that produces an unofficial handicap index estimate from the score, course rating, and slope rating you enter for several rounds.

Enter at least 3 completed rounds, choose a calculation assumption, and confirm that you have reviewed your local rules. The calculator does not use a course database, and its result is unofficial.

Enter Round Details

For each round, enter a whole-number score of 50 or more, a course rating from 55 to 80, and a whole-number slope rating from 55 through 155. Course ratings can use the displayed decimal step. Fully blank rows are ignored. If a row is only partly filled, the calculator shows a validation error instead of calculating.

  • Use Remove round to delete an individual row.
  • Use Add round to enter more rounds.
  • Check the confirmation box after reviewing your local club or handicap authority's rules.

Choose the Calculation Assumption

Select one of the two visible options:

  • WHS-style estimate (lowest differentials by round count, with low-round adjustment) selects the coded number of lowest differentials and applies the calculator's low-round adjustment table. It supports up to 20 entered rounds; larger inputs use the 20-round selection.
  • Simple average of all entered differentials averages every completed round's differential and applies no low-round adjustment.

These are simplified assumptions coded into this calculator. The page does not establish that the WHS-style table reproduces any official rulebook.

Calculate and Review the Result

Select Calculate estimate after entering at least 3 complete rounds and checking the confirmation box. For each completed round, the calculator uses:

Handicap differential = (Score − Course rating) × 113 ÷ Slope rating

The estimate uses:

Handicap index estimate = (Average of differentials used × 0.96) + low-round adjustment

The result shows the formula, the estimated handicap index, rounds entered, differentials used, each round's differential, and summary values. For the WHS-style assumption, the average uses the selected lowest differentials; for the simple-average assumption, it uses every completed differential. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) for the plain-text result.

Manage or Reset Entries

Use Remove round to delete a round row and correct the current set of entries. Use Reset to clear the result and confirmation state and restore three round rows.

What the Calculator Does Not Do

The calculator does not look up course ratings or slope ratings, submit scores, or produce an official handicap. It performs the calculation locally in the calculator script on the values you provide. Confirm your local rules and use your club or handicap authority's official system when an officially recognized handicap is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the handicap index shown by this tool official?

No. It is a locally-computed, unofficial estimate using a simplified version of common handicap-differential math. It is not submitted to or verified by any club, tour, or association, does not certify eligibility for handicap-based competition, and does not replace your club or national handicap authority's official system.

How is a handicap differential calculated?

Handicap differential = (Score minus Course rating) multiplied by 113, divided by Slope rating. The calculator computes this for every completed round. The WHS-style assumption averages the selected lowest differentials; the simple-average assumption averages every entered differential.

Does this tool look up my course's rating and slope automatically?

No. It does not access any course database. You enter the course rating and slope rating yourself for each round; the calculator only performs the arithmetic on the numbers you provide.

What does the manual confirmation checkbox do?

It requires you to confirm you have reviewed your local club or handicap authority's actual rules before the calculator will show a handicap index estimate, since this tool applies only a simplified, generic formula and not any specific organization's official rulebook.

How many rounds do I need to enter?

At least 3 rounds, each with a score, course rating, and slope rating. The WHS-style assumption uses selected lowest differentials from the entered rounds, while the simple-average assumption uses every completed differential.
