What does this Image to Text tool do?
Use this browser-based OCR tool to recognize printed or typed running text in one local image. Choose a language, adjust the image, run OCR, review confidence, and view the result as Paragraphs, Lines, or Plain text. You can then copy the text or export it as TXT, JSON, or a searchable PDF.
Choose the image, language, rotation, and crop
Load one .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .bmp, or .gif file at a time. Use Drop an image here or click browse file.
- Language(s) - select one or more languages. Use Ctrl-click or Cmd-click to select more than one.
- Rotation - choose 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees to correct sideways or upside-down text. Changing it clears the crop selection.
- Confidence threshold - choose 90%, 80%, 70%, or 60%. Words below this value are marked as uncertain in supported result views.
- Crop region (optional) - drag over the preview to limit recognition to that area. Leave it unselected to use the whole image, or click Clear selection to restore whole-image recognition.
The preview is scaled for display. OCR uses the selected area from the rotated source image.
Review OCR results and confidence
Review the overall confidence and recognized-word information. Paragraphs groups running text into blocks, while Lines shows individual lines. Both views highlight words below the selected confidence threshold. Plain text shows unformatted OCR text without confidence highlighting.
These views reflect running-text layout. They do not reconstruct table rows, columns, merged cells, or form structure.
Copy and export the recognized text
- Copy text attempts to copy the plain OCR text to the clipboard. If clipboard access is unavailable or the copy fails, copy the text manually.
- Download text (.txt) exports the plain recognized text.
- Download JSON includes the text, selected languages, overall confidence, threshold, paragraph/line/word data, confidence values, uncertainty flags, and bounding-box positions.
- Download searchable PDF creates a one-page PDF with the rotated and optionally cropped OCR image plus an invisible positioned text layer. The source canvas is rendered as a JPEG before embedding. Words containing unsupported characters may be omitted from the invisible text layer, while the page image remains.
How to extract text from an image
- Use Drop an image here or click browse file to load one supported image.
- Set Language(s), Rotation, and Confidence threshold.
- Optionally drag a Crop region (optional) on the preview.
- Review Paragraphs, Lines, or Plain text.
- Use Copy text, Download text (.txt), Download JSON, or Download searchable PDF.
Limits, privacy, and errors
Images are read and processed in browser memory. Export files are generated locally. Recognition is not reliable for handwriting, and quality varies by language, so check the confidence information before using the output.
Unreadable or corrupt images can stop loading. If the OCR library fails to load or OCR itself fails, the recognition operation stops and an error is shown. Searchable-PDF export can also stop if the PDF library fails to load or PDF construction fails. This implementation does not define a file-size limit, maximum image dimension, processing-time guarantee, or browser compatibility matrix.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool read handwriting?
Not reliably. It may produce output, but handwriting recognition is not reliable; treat the result as unusable unless you manually verify it.
Does this tool reconstruct tables?
No. It recognizes running text as lines and paragraphs, not table structure. Use the separate "PDF & Image Table Extractor" for table reconstruction.
Is every language recognized equally well?
No. Recognition quality varies by language. Check the confidence information and review uncertain words.
What do the highlighted words mean?
They are below the selected OCR confidence threshold. Highlighting appears in Paragraphs and Lines; Plain text is unformatted.
Does this tool upload my image anywhere?
No. The image is read and processed in your browser with Tesseract.js and pdf-lib; it is not sent to a server.
