Drop a video here

or

MP4 . WebM . MOV . and other formats your browser can play

How to use the frame extractor

Load a video, move the player to the frame you want, and press Extract frame. The image downloads straight to your device at the video's full resolution.

  1. Drop a video here or click browse files.
  2. Move to the frame with the seek bar, the frame-step buttons, or by typing a time or frame number.
  3. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP. JPG and WebP show a Quality slider.
  4. Press Extract frame, or press E. The file downloads and a preview appears below.

How to pick an exact time

Time mode splits the position into hours, minutes and seconds. Hours show only for videos of an hour or longer, and minutes only for videos of a minute or longer. For a short clip you type seconds alone. Seconds accept decimals, so 22.2 means 22 seconds and 200 milliseconds.

Short clip (under 1 min): 22.2
Under 1 hour: 1 m 05.250 s
Long video: 1 h 02 m 03.5 s

The fields follow the player while you scrub or play, and typing in them moves the player. In the fields, Up and Down change the value, and Enter seeks and extracts.

How to pick a frame number

Set Position by to Frame number and enter the frame. The tool measures the frame rate when the video loads. If the value looks wrong, correct Frames per second and the frame number updates to match. Frame numbers start at 0.

Player controls and shortcuts

The player has a seek bar with a time tooltip, play and pause, frame step, 5-second skips, volume, playback speed from 0.1x to 4x, loop and fullscreen. Click the player to give it keyboard focus.

  • Space or K: play and pause
  • , and .: previous and next frame

  • J: back 10 seconds. L: loop. M: mute. F: fullscreen.
  • [ and ]: slower and faster

Which format should I use

PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel, which suits screenshots, text and later editing. JPG gives smaller files for photographic frames. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at similar quality, but some older software cannot open it.

What size is the saved image

The image has the video's own width and height. The size of the player on the page does not change the result. Frames are read from what the browser decodes, so a video that plays correctly produces a correct frame.

Frame Extractor or Video Preview Generator

Use Frame Extractor when you want one frame quickly. Use Video Preview Generator when you need a poster at a set size, or a contact sheet, storyboard or thumbnail strip from many frames.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save a frame from a video?

Drop the video, move to the frame, choose a format and press Extract frame. The image downloads immediately.

Can I pick a frame by exact time?

Yes. Enter hours, minutes and seconds, with milliseconds as decimals, such as 22.2 seconds.

Can I pick a frame by frame number?

Yes. Switch Position by to Frame number. The frame rate is measured on load and you can correct it.

Why is the frame slightly different from the one I saw?

Browsers seek to the nearest decoded frame. After seeking, use the frame-step buttons to land on the exact frame, then extract.

Why will my video not load?

Your browser can only play codecs it supports. MP4 with H.264 and WebM work almost everywhere. Some MKV, HEVC and AVI files do not play.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is opened through a local browser URL and the frame is created on your device.
