What the Unicode Inspector reports
Enter text to get a read-only analysis of the textarea content. Each report row represents a grapheme cluster when Intl.Segmenter is available. A row can contain several code points, so the report includes the cluster number and code-point index range.
Click a preview character or report row to open Character Detail. The detail panel can show the code point, decimal value, name where available, block, category, script, combining status, encodings, escapes, and character flags. Unsupported name data appears as (name unavailable).
How to inspect text
- Paste text into the field with the placeholder Paste text to inspect....
- Use Upload for a
.txtfile, or drop a file onto the text input area. Drag-and-drop reads the first dropped file as text. - Click a character in Preview or a row in Character Report to open its detail.
- For a separate lookup, enter a pasted character, a code point such as
U+1F600, a decimal value such as128512, or a supported name. The lookup updates automatically as the query changes; it does not select or jump to a row in the report.
Filter and export the report
Choose a filter to narrow the report. The available options are All characters, Non-ASCII, Whitespace, Control, Invisible, Combining marks, Bidirectional controls, Surrogates, Emoji / ZWJ sequences, and ZWJ sequences only.
- Turn on Unique only to remove repeated cluster values.
- Click Copy Report to copy the rows currently displayed.
- Click CSV to download those same displayed rows as
unicode-inspector-report.csv.
Both export actions use the current filter and Unique only setting.
Limitations and empty states
- Name results use the local curated and algorithmic data in the tool. Name lookup searches its local control and curated tables, including partial matches in the curated table; it does not cover every Unicode name.
- When
Intl.Segmenteris unavailable, the tool falls back toArray.from(text). That fallback is not grapheme-accurate. - Empty input keeps the placeholder states. A filter with no matches shows
No characters match the current filter. - An invalid lookup shows a
No matchmessage. Copy Report and CSV do nothing when no report rows are available. - The tool reads the text for analysis and does not normalize, convert, remove, or rewrite the textarea content. Clipboard and download actions depend on browser APIs used by the script.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a grapheme cluster?
A grapheme cluster is text treated as one displayed character, even when it contains multiple Unicode code points, such as an emoji with a modifier or a letter with a combining accent. This tool uses Intl.Segmenter when available; its fallback is not grapheme-accurate.
Does this tool change my text?
No. The Unicode Inspector only reads and reports the text. It does not normalize, convert, remove, or rewrite characters.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
In the inspected implementation, the analyzed text is read in the browser. The script contains no upload or server request for that text.
