Review the highlighted text and report
Paste text into the tool to find selected visually similar characters from another script. A finding includes the character, its Unicode code point, script, position, likely visual alternative, and risk value.
What the report shows
- Character: The exact glyph flagged in your text.
- Code Point: Its Unicode code point (e.g.
U+0430), so you can verify it independently. - Script: The detected script, such as Cyrillic, Greek, or Armenian.
- Position: Where the character appears in the text, counted from 1. The count follows the JavaScript character sequence created by
Array.from. - Likely Confusable: The mapped character that is likely to look similar. The table can include alternatives such as letters or digits.
- Risk: The hard-coded
high, medium, orlowvalue for that table entry.
How Detection Works
The script counts non-whitespace characters whose detected script is neither Common nor Unknown. The script with the highest count becomes dominant; if no eligible script is counted, it defaults to Latin. The tool then checks the hard-coded confusable-character table and flags an entry only when its script differs from the dominant script.
How to Use the Homoglyph Detector
- Paste text into the input. The scan updates as you type.
- Use Upload to open a file picker. The shared text upload control accepts
.txt,.csv,.log, and.mdfiles (plus files reported as plain text). You can also drag a compatible file onto the text input to read it as text. - Review Highlighted Preview for marks colored by the hard-coded risk value.
- Inspect Detection Report for Character, Code Point, Script, Position, Likely Confusable, and Risk.
- When findings exist, select Copy for tab-separated report text, or CSV to download
homoglyph-report.csv.
Coverage and workflow limits
- The lookup table contains selected entries from Cyrillic, Greek, and Armenian; it does not cover every homoglyph or every Unicode confusable.
- An empty report means no eligible table entry was found outside the dominant script. It is not proof that the text contains no other confusable characters.
- The tool reports matches only. It does not block, normalize, validate, prevent, or filter text.
- Copy and CSV do nothing when there are no findings. No maximum input length or file-size limit is documented here.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
Scanning runs locally in your browser with JavaScript. Pasted text and the contents of uploaded or dropped files are read in the browser; the implementation does not send the input text to a server.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a homoglyph?
A homoglyph is a character that looks the same or nearly the same as another character but comes from a different script or Unicode block, such as Cyrillic а (U+0430) looking identical to Latin a (U+0061).
How is this different from an invisible character detector?
An invisible character detector looks for hidden formatting characters that produce no visible glyph, like zero-width spaces. This tool looks for the opposite problem: visible characters that display normally but belong to the wrong script and can fool a reader or a string comparison.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All scanning happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you paste or upload is sent to a server.
