What the tool removes
Paste text into the tool to find URL tokens and either remove them or replace them with custom placeholder text. It matches http:// and https:// URLs, www.-prefixed URLs when enabled, and bare domain-style URLs when that option is enabled. A match can include its path, query string, and fragment. Line breaks stay in place, but the enabled-by-default whitespace cleanup changes repeated spaces or tabs and trailing spaces or tabs on every line.
How to use Remove URLs From Text
- Paste text into the input box, or use Upload to choose a
.txtfile. You can also drop a file onto the input area. - Choose Remove URLs or Replace with placeholder. In replacement mode, edit the Placeholder field.
- Choose the URL matching and whitespace options described below.
- Enable Show before-and-after preview if you want to inspect highlighted matches and the result.
- Change the input or any option as needed. The output and live count of matched URL tokens update automatically; there is no separate Run or Submit control.
- Use Copy to copy the output, or Download to save it as
cleaned-text.txt.
Options and matching behavior
- Remove URLs: Deletes each matched URL token.
- Replace with placeholder: Inserts the value from the Placeholder field in place of each match.
- Match www-prefixed URLs: Also detects links that start with
www.but have no explicithttp://orhttps://scheme. - Match bare domain-style URLs (no scheme or www): Detects domain-like tokens with no scheme or
www.prefix, such asexample.comorexample.com/page. It is off by default and uses a fixed common-TLD list. - Clean up leftover whitespace: Enabled by default. On every line, it changes each run of two or more spaces or tabs to one space and removes trailing spaces or tabs. It does not only clean spaces created by URL removal.
- Show before-and-after preview: Highlights detected matches in the original text and displays the processed result.
Matching limitations and boundary handling
- Scheme-based matches use only
http://andhttps://; separate options also matchwww.URLs and selected bare domains. URL candidates cannot contain whitespace or angle brackets. - Bare-domain matching is limited to the tool's fixed common-TLD list. It can also match domain-like text such as filenames or version-like text, so keep that option off when you do not want those matches.
- Boundary handling uses trimming heuristics, not URL syntax validation. Trailing periods, commas, semicolons, colons, exclamation marks, question marks, and quotes may be trimmed from a candidate. Unmatched closing brackets may also be trimmed.
- The tool does not validate URL reachability, extract a separate URL list, or remove HTML tags.
Processing and output limitations
Text processing, file reading, preview generation, copying, and downloading occur in the browser. This page does not send the text to a server for processing. Line breaks are preserved. If you turn off Clean up leftover whitespace, the additional line-by-line whitespace normalization is not applied. The output is cleaned text, not a separate list of URLs.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does this tool give me a list of the URLs it found?
No. This tool only returns your original text with URL tokens removed or replaced. If you need a de-duplicated list of the links themselves, use the Extract URLs tool instead.
Does it check whether the URLs are valid or reachable?
No. It matches URL-like text patterns to find tokens to remove; it does not validate URL syntax. It also does not check DNS resolution, HTTP status, or reachability - use a URL Validator for that.
Will it catch a URL right next to punctuation, like (see example.com) or https://example.com/page,?
Bare-domain examples such as example.com are matched only when Match bare domain-style URLs (no scheme or www) is enabled. The tool heuristically trims listed trailing punctuation and unmatched closing brackets; this boundary cleanup is not URL parsing or syntax validation.
