How to extract addresses from text
Paste text into the input area, or select a file with Upload. The picker accepts .txt and .csv files. The tool scans the text for US-style street addresses and PO boxes, then shows a newline-separated list in the output area.
- Paste text into the input area, use Upload, or drop a file on the input area.
- Adjust Unique only, Full addresses only (city, state, ZIP), and Include PO boxes as needed.
- Review the live address count and the extracted output. The count changes when the input or filters change.
- Choose Copy to copy the newline-separated results, or Download to save
addresses.txt.
Set the extraction filters
- Unique only is enabled by default. It compares extracted strings case-insensitively after whitespace normalization.
- Full addresses only (city, state, ZIP) removes street matches without a detected city, state abbreviation, and ZIP. PO boxes are appended separately, so they can still appear without those components when Include PO boxes is enabled.
- Include PO boxes is enabled by default and includes matches such as
PO Box 1234.
What the matcher detects and misses
The matcher targets US-style street addresses and PO boxes, not general location references. A street match needs a one-to-six-digit house number with an optional letter, up to four street-name words, and a recognized suffix such as Street, St, Avenue, Ave, Road, or Rd. Optional apartment, suite, or unit markers are recognized when directly attached to the street match.
A full street match may include a city, a US state abbreviation from the built-in list, and a five-digit or ZIP+4 ZIP code. PO Box patterns may include a city, two-letter state code, and five-digit or ZIP+4 ZIP code.
Unrecognized formats, non-US addresses, missing required street components, standalone city names, phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs are not extracted.
Processing and limitations
Address matching and text-file reading occur in browser JavaScript. The address-extraction script contains no upload request for the input text; selected files are read with FileReader. Direct file selection is limited to .txt and .csv, although pasted text can come from other sources.
The tool pattern-matches text. It does not verify that an address exists or is deliverable.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What address formats can the extractor detect?
It detects US-style street addresses with a one-to-six-digit house number, up to four street-name words, a recognized suffix, and optional apartment, suite, or unit markers. It can also match a city, a listed US state abbreviation, and a five-digit or ZIP+4 code, plus PO Box patterns.
What is "Full addresses only (city, state, ZIP)" mode?
By default, the tool returns recognizable street matches even without a city, state, or ZIP. Enable Full addresses only (city, state, ZIP) to filter out street matches without those components. PO boxes are appended separately and can still appear without them when Include PO boxes is enabled.
Why does this tool exist separately from phone, email, or URL extraction?
Phone, email, and URL extractors match different patterns. This tool looks for a house number, street name, and recognized suffix, so those address-like patterns are handled separately.
Is my data sent to a server when I paste or upload it?
Address matching and text-file reading occur in browser JavaScript. The address-extraction script contains no upload request for the input text; it reads selected files with FileReader.
