How the Writing Prompt Generator Works
The Writing Prompt Generator builds an actionable creative task or premise for you to develop. Each result combines a character, a conflict or task, a setting, and constraints such as point of view, format, audience, difficulty, and length. It does not generate finished prose, dialogue, quotes, slogans, or filler text.
Choose the Prompt Controls
- Use Genre, Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, and Format to shape the task. These controls include Any / Surprise Me.
- Set Audience, Difficulty, and Length from their fixed options. These controls do not include Any / Surprise Me.
- For Format, the available labels include Scene / Vignette, Narrative Poem, Screenplay Scene, and Diary Entry.
- Set Quantity, or enter an optional value in Seed (optional).
Generate, Copy, or Download Results
Choose a quantity of 1, 5, 10, or 20, and the result action bar stays hidden until prompts exist. Each result shows its genre, format, difficulty, task text, and metadata or constraints.
Use the icon-only button titled Copy this prompt for one result. For the current batch, use Copy All, Download TXT, or Download CSV.
Reuse a Seed for Repeatable Results
The tool trims the value in Seed (optional) before using it. A nonblank seed with the same controls produces the same batch under the current code. Leave the field blank to use Math.random for a fresh batch. A seed does not guarantee the requested number of results if the selected combinations are exhausted.
Limits and Copying Behavior
- The script attempts to deduplicate task text, so highly constrained settings can produce fewer prompts than requested.
- Copying uses the shared browser clipboard when available and a local selection fallback otherwise. If both are unavailable, the tool reports that manual copying is required.
- Prompt generation runs in the page's local JavaScript. The shared page also loads analytics scripts, so a broad “Zero Data Sent to Server” claim is not supported.
How to Use the Writing Prompt Generator
- Set your controls: choose the available values for Genre, Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, Format, Audience, Difficulty, and Length.
- Choose a quantity: select 1, 5, 10, or 20; prompts update automatically.
- Optionally add a seed: to make the batch reproducible later.
- Review the automatically generated batch of prompts.
- Copy or export: use Copy this prompt, Copy All, Download TXT, or Download CSV.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does this tool write the story for me?
No. It produces an actionable creative task or premise for you to develop - never finished prose, dialogue, or a resolved plot.
What controls can I use to shape a prompt?
Use Genre, Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View, Format, Audience, Difficulty, Length, Quantity, and Seed (optional). Only the first six selectors offer Any / Surprise Me.
What does the seed field do?
It makes a batch reproducible under the current code. The same trimmed seed and settings generate the same batch. Leave it blank for a fresh random batch.
Is this the same as a quote, slogan, or random text generator?
No. Those tools output finished lines meant to be used as-is. This tool outputs an open-ended task meant to be expanded into your own writing.
Can I generate a batch of prompts at once?
Yes. Choose 1, 5, 10, or 20; the batch updates automatically. The tool attempts to avoid duplicate task text, but a constrained batch may contain fewer results than requested.
