Slug Converter

Turn any text into a clean, URL-friendly slug. Choose your separator, case, and accent handling below.

Leave empty or use 0 for no limit.

Slug Converter: enter text, choose options, and copy the result

What does this tool do? It converts text into a slug in browser JavaScript. Enter or upload text, choose the separator and processing options, then use Copy or Download. The output updates when the input or controls change. Lowercase and Transliterate accents are enabled by default, but you can turn either one off.

How to use the Slug Converter

  1. Type or paste text into the input area, or use Upload to choose a text file. You can also drop a text file anywhere on this page.
  2. Choose Hyphen ( - ), Underscore ( _ ), or Dot ( . ) from Separator.
  3. Set Lowercase, Transliterate accents, Treat multi-line input as one slug per line, and Max length as needed.
  4. Review the generated output. Select Copy to place it on the clipboard, subject to browser clipboard permissions, or select Download to save it as slug.txt.

What the conversion controls do

  • Separator: The tool offers hyphen, underscore, and dot. Repeated separators are collapsed, and separators at the start or end are removed.
  • Lowercase: When enabled, letters are converted to lowercase. When disabled, the case is retained for ASCII letters.
  • Transliterate accents: When enabled, the tool applies NFKD normalization and removes the resulting accent marks. For example, café becomes cafe.
  • After the optional transformations, every character outside ASCII A-Z, a-z, and 0-9 is replaced by the selected separator. This includes whitespace, punctuation, symbols, emoji, and non-ASCII letters that were not transliterated.
  • Treat multi-line input as one slug per line: When enabled, each line is converted independently and the output keeps the line breaks. Otherwise, line breaks are treated like other non-ASCII-letter-or-digit characters and become separators.

Files, output, and limits

Upload and Drop file read text files in the browser. The generated file picker accepts .txt and text/plain. Download creates a plain-text file named slug.txt.

Max length is optional. An empty field or 0 disables truncation. A positive value cuts the slug at that many characters, then removes a separator if the cut leaves one at the end; it does not wait for a whole word.

Important edge cases

  • Empty input produces empty output.
  • Blank lines in per-line mode produce blank output lines.
  • Without Transliterate accents, non-ASCII letters are not preserved; they become separators during filtering.
  • Unsupported files and file-reading failures are reported near the input; clipboard failures are reported beside Copy so you can retry or copy the output manually.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a slug?

A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as my-first-post in /blog/my-first-post/.

Why use hyphens instead of underscores in a slug?

Hyphen is the tool's default separator, but you can choose Underscore ( _ ) or Dot ( . ) when another format is required.

Does this tool remove accented characters?

When Transliterate accents is enabled, accented characters are normalized and their accent marks are removed before filtering. When it is disabled, non-ASCII letters become separators.

Is my text safe when I use this tool?

The conversion, text-file reading, and output generation are implemented in browser JavaScript. This confirms how this tool processes the text, but it does not establish complete page-level privacy behavior for other imported scripts.
