Text Cleaner

The canonical text-cleanup workspace: toggle individual actions or apply a preset for general text, documents, email, AI / Markdown, code, or data.

Active configuration: General Text

How to use Text Cleaner

  1. Enter text: Paste text into the input, or use Upload or Drop file. The file picker accepts .txt, .md, .csv, .tsv, and .log files and reads them as text.
  2. Choose a preset: Select General Text, Documents, Email, AI / Markdown, Code, or Data. Selecting a preset replaces the current checkbox selection.
  3. Customize: Change an action checkbox to switch the active configuration to Custom.
  4. Review the result: The output updates automatically. The stats line shows result character and line counts with their deltas.
  5. Finish: Select Copy, or select Download to save the output as text-cleaner-output.txt.

Preset behavior

  • General Text: Enables line trimming, repeated-space collapsing, blank-line collapsing, line-ending normalization, smart-quote conversion, and whole-text trimming.
  • Documents: Enables line-ending normalization, control-character removal, leading and trailing per-line trimming, repeated-space collapsing, tab conversion, blank-line collapsing, and whole-text trimming.
  • Email: Enables line-ending normalization, smart-quote conversion, trailing-whitespace trimming, repeated-space collapsing, blank-line collapsing, quoted-reply-line removal, repeated-punctuation collapsing, and whole-text trimming.
  • AI / Markdown: Enables line-ending normalization, zero-width-character removal, smart-quote conversion, dash and ellipsis normalization, trailing-whitespace trimming, blank-line collapsing, and whole-text trimming. It does not enable Markdown stripping.
  • Code: Enables line-ending normalization, control-character removal, tab conversion, trailing-whitespace trimming, blank-line collapsing, and whole-text trimming. It does not trim leading whitespace or collapse internal spaces; tab characters become the number of spaces set by Tab size.
  • Data: Enables line-ending normalization, per-line leading and trailing trimming, repeated-space collapsing, empty-line removal, duplicate-line removal, and whole-text trimming.

Controls and processing behavior

The page starts with General Text active. Actions are grouped under Whitespace & Lines, Characters & Encoding, Markup, Content Removal, and Document. Available actions include Normalize unicode (NFKC), Remove quoted reply lines (lines starting with >), and Trim leading/trailing whitespace from whole text.

  • Tab size: The visible range is 1–12. It affects conversion only when Convert tabs to spaces is enabled.
  • Max blank lines: The visible range is 0–10. It affects processing only when Collapse consecutive blank lines is enabled.
  • Clear all actions: Unchecks every action, leaves the input intact, and produces unchanged output.

Enabled actions run in a fixed pipeline order, not in the order in which you checked them. The output updates when the input, checkboxes, or numeric settings change. Changing a checkbox switches the active configuration to Custom; changing a numeric setting alone does not.

Confirmed limitations

  • Duplicate-line removal compares complete line strings; similar lines are not treated as duplicates.
  • Remove URLs matches http://, https://, and www. patterns. Remove email addresses uses the implemented email regular expression; neither action performs semantic link or address parsing.
  • Markdown and HTML stripping are pattern-based, not structural parsing.
  • Uploaded and dropped files are read as text. The tool does not validate file structure.
  • Processing runs in browser-side JavaScript.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does the AI / Markdown preset do?

It normalizes line endings, removes zero-width characters, converts smart quotes, normalizes em/en dashes and ellipses, trims trailing whitespace, collapses blank lines, and trims the whole text. It does not enable Markdown stripping.

Will the Code preset break my indentation?

The Code preset normalizes line endings, removes control characters, converts tab characters to the configured number of spaces, trims trailing whitespace, collapses blank lines, and trims the whole text. It does not trim leading whitespace or collapse internal spaces; tab characters become the number of spaces set by Tab size.

Can I mix and match actions instead of using a preset?

Yes. Selecting a preset replaces the current checkbox selection. Toggling any checkbox afterward switches the workspace to a Custom configuration.

Is my text sent to a server?

The implementation processes the input in browser-side JavaScript, so the text is processed locally in your browser.
