Fantasy Name Generator: Fictional Narrative Names
Use the Fantasy Name Generator to create fictional character and worldbuilding names from Genre, Species / Culture, Character Role, Phonetic Style, Length, Gender Presentation, and an optional Starting Letter. It creates batches, can repeat a batch with Use seed, and provides copy and TXT/JSON download actions. It does not check real identities, uniqueness, trademarks, usernames, domains, or brand suitability.
Configure the Name Controls
- Genre offers High Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Steampunk, Mythic / Folklore, Fairy Tale, Post-Apocalyptic, and Horror.
- Species / Culture offers Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Halfling, Dragonkin, Fae, Undead, Celestial, Demon, Android / AI, and Alien. The selected preset affects the generation rules.
- Character Role offers ten role choices and supplies the role used for an optional epithet or title.
- Phonetic Style can be Auto (match species), Soft / Melodic, Harsh / Guttural, Ancient / Archaic, Exotic / Alien, or Simple / Earthy.
- Length sets Short, Medium, or Long for the normal name path. Gender Presentation sets Any, Feminine, Masculine, or Neutral / Androgynous; matching endings are conditional and vary by species.
- Starting Letter accepts one alphabetic character. The generator retries up to 60 times, then applies the requested letter as a fallback if needed.
- Quantity controls the batch size and is clamped to 1-200.
- Enable Add role epithet / title to append an optional role-based epithet. Commoner has no configured epithet output.
- Show style notes controls whether style notes appear beside the displayed results.
Generate and Repeat a Batch
The page generates an initial batch when it loads. Change the controls; the batch updates automatically.
To repeat a batch, enable Use seed and enter a non-empty value in the seed field, such as northwind-7. The same seed and settings reproduce the same batch. If the toggle is off or the seed field is empty, generation uses Math.random.
Read, Copy, and Export Results
Each result shows the generated name and an approximate pronunciation hint based on vowel groups. Style notes appear only when Show style notes is enabled. Use the individual Copy name action or Copy All for the displayed names.
- Download TXT saves
fantasy-names.txt. It includes pronunciation and style-note text only when Show style notes is enabled at download time. - Download JSON saves
fantasy-names.jsonwith the name, epithet, display text, pronunciation, note, generated, and fictional fields. The JSONnotefield is included regardless of the display toggle.
How to Use the Tool
- Choose Genre, Species / Culture, and Character Role.
- Set Phonetic Style, Length, Gender Presentation, and, if needed, Starting Letter.
- Set Quantity. Turn on Add role epithet / title or Show style notes if you want those outputs.
- For repeatable results, enable Use seed and fill in the seed field.
- Copy or download the automatically updated results.
Limitations and Scope
- The pronunciation output is a simple vowel-group and stress heuristic, not a verified linguistic pronunciation guide.
- Species effects such as endings and apostrophes are conditional. Android / AI uses a separate letter-and-unit designation format and does not follow the normal Length, Phonetic Style, or gender-ending path.
- Generated names are algorithmic fiction. The tool does not check uniqueness, real-world identity data, trademarks, username availability, domain availability, or brand suitability.
- Style notes use a middle-dot separator and remain descriptive heuristics rather than verified linguistic guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are these names based on real people?
No. The generator creates fictional output from its configured rules and does not look up real-world identity data.
Can I get the same names again later?
Yes. Enable Use seed, enter the same non-empty seed, and keep the same settings to reproduce the batch.
What does Show style notes change?
It controls notes shown beside the results and whether pronunciation and style-note text is added to Download TXT. Download JSON still includes its note field.
What happens with Android / AI?
It produces a designation such as a letter, unit label, and number instead of the normal phonetic name path. The usual Length, Phonetic Style, and gender-ending behavior does not shape that designation.
Does this check if a name is available?
No. It does not check username, domain, trademark, uniqueness, or brand availability. Use a dedicated Username Generator or Domain Name Generator for different naming tasks.
