How to Use the Attendance Percentage Calculator
Enter your attendance figures, then click Calculate to see your current rate. To calculate allowable absences, provide both optional values: Target attendance % (optional) and Remaining scheduled sessions (optional). Leave both blank to calculate the current rate only.
- Enter sessions attended: how many sessions you have attended so far.
- Enter total sessions so far: how many sessions have been held so far, including ones you missed.
- Optionally enter Target attendance % (optional): the rate you need to reach or maintain.
- Optionally enter Remaining scheduled sessions (optional): how many sessions are still scheduled. Enter it together with the target for the absence calculation.
- Click Calculate to display the result, formula, and assumptions.
- Click Reset to clear all four inputs, any error message, and the result.
What the Result Shows
The result shows Current attendance rate and Sessions missed so far. When both optional values are supplied, it also shows Remaining sessions you must attend and More sessions you can miss. The result includes Formula used and a table of the entered and intermediate values.
Use Copy result to copy the plain-text summary. If clipboard access fails, the calculator displays a manual-copy message. Use Download result (.txt) to save the same summary as a text file.
Attendance Percentage Formula
Use Attendance % = Sessions attended / Total sessions x 100. For example, 42 attended out of 48 total gives 87.5%. The displayed percentage is formatted to two decimal places.
How Allowable Absences Are Calculated
When both optional values are entered, the calculator applies these steps:
Final total sessions = Total sessions so far + Remaining sessionsMinimum sessions to attend = ceil(Target % / 100 x Final total sessions)Minimum remaining sessions to attend = max(0, Minimum sessions to attend - Sessions attended so far)Allowable additional absences = Remaining sessions - Minimum remaining sessions to attend
ceil rounds the required attendance up because sessions are whole units. The displayed absence count is capped at the entered remaining sessions and clamped to 0. All remaining absences are allowed only when the calculated Remaining sessions you must attend is 0. A result of 0 for More sessions you can miss can mean the target cannot be reached with the entered remaining sessions, especially when the required remaining attendance is greater than that count.
Inputs, Assumptions, and Limits
- All past and future sessions are treated as equally weighted.
- Total sessions so far means sessions already held. Enter future sessions separately as Remaining scheduled sessions (optional).
- The calculator uses only the numbers you enter. It does not fetch school, university, or employer records.
- It does not apply excused-absence rules, weighted session types, grading cutoffs, or jurisdiction-specific attendance policies.
- Use the same unit for attended and total sessions, such as class periods, school days, shifts, or meetings.
Validation and Error Cases
Calculation stops and the result stays hidden when an entry is invalid. Sessions attended must be a whole number of 0 or more. Total sessions so far must be a whole number greater than 0, and Sessions attended cannot exceed it. If supplied, Target attendance % must be between 0 and 100, and Remaining scheduled sessions must be a whole number of 0 or more. The calculator shows a specific error message for the failed check.
Privacy & Security
The attendance calculation uses the four values entered into this calculator and runs in the browser through the local script. It does not use attendance records or external school, university, or employer data. The result is a calculation, not official attendance-policy advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is attendance percentage calculated?
Attendance percentage = Sessions attended / Total sessions x 100. For example, attending 42 out of 48 scheduled classes gives an attendance rate of 87.5%.
How many more sessions can I miss and still hit my target?
If you enter a target attendance percentage and the number of sessions still remaining, the calculator finds the minimum number of those remaining sessions you must attend to reach the target, then subtracts that from the remaining count to show how many more you can miss. This assumes every session (past and future) is weighted equally.
Does this tool know my school's or employer's actual attendance policy?
No. It does not know or apply any specific school, university, employer, or jurisdictional attendance policy. You must enter your own target percentage and totals; the calculator only does the arithmetic on the numbers you provide.
What counts as a session?
A session is whatever unit you are tracking attendance for - a class period, a full school day, a shift, or a meeting. Attended sessions and total sessions must use the same definition of a session, or the percentage will not be meaningful.
Does this tool fetch attendance records or give official advice?
No. It performs a single, transparent calculation using only the numbers you type in. It does not fetch school, university, or employer attendance records, and it is not official advice from any institution.
