How to Use the Grade Calculator
- Edit the letter-grade table if your school's scale differs from the default. Use Add row, remove rows, or choose Reset to default scale.
- Select one of the five tabs: Weighted course grade, Final grade target, Test score %, Missed questions, or Attendance %.
- Enter the values requested in that mode, then click Calculate.
- Review the result, formula, assumptions, inputs, and intermediate values. Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to keep a plain-text copy.
Choose the Calculation That Matches Your Task
- Weighted course grade: enter item names, Score (%), and Weight.
- Final grade target: enter graded items, Final exam weight (%), and Target overall grade (%).
- Test score %: enter Points earned and Points possible.
- Missed questions: enter Total questions and Target score (%). Add Missed so far (optional) for the current standing.
- Attendance %: enter Sessions attended and Total sessions so far. To get a projection, enter both Target attendance % (optional) and Remaining scheduled sessions (optional).
Understand the Formulas and Assumptions
The tool shows the formula and intermediate values with each result:
Weighted grade = Sum of (item score × item weight) ÷ Sum of item weightsCurrent weighted score = Sum of (item score × item weight / 100);Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) ÷ (Final exam weight / 100)Score % = Points earned ÷ Points possible × 100Minimum correct needed = ceil(Target % / 100 × Total questions); the maximum missed count is total questions minus that value. This assumes equal-value questions.Attendance % = Sessions attended ÷ Total sessions × 100. The projection uses the final total sessions to calculate minimum remaining attendance and allowable absences.
Final grade target requires item weights plus the final exam weight to total 100%. Weighted course grade normalizes by the entered weight total, so its weights do not need to total 100%. The calculations do not apply curves, extra credit, dropped-score rules, or instructor rounding.
Edit the Letter-Grade Cutoffs
The table starts with A/B/C/D/F cutoffs at 90, 80, 70, and 60 percent. Change the labels or minimum percentages, add rows, remove rows, or use Reset to default scale. The scale labels percentage results in modes that display letter grades; Attendance % displays an attendance rate without a letter grade. The scale is checked before every calculation.
Read, Copy, or Download the Result
The Result section shows the headline value, Formula used, assumptions, inputs, intermediate values, and final values. Copy result copies a plain-text summary when clipboard access works. If copying fails, the tool shows a manual-copy message. Download result (.txt) saves the same type of summary as a text file.
Validation, Limits, and Privacy
- Item scores must be numbers of 0 or more; item weights must be greater than 0. Completely blank item rows are skipped. Item names are optional, and unnamed rows receive generated names such as Item 1. Item scores are not capped at 100 by the script.
- Required counts use positive whole numbers where applicable. Points earned cannot exceed points possible, attended sessions cannot exceed total sessions, and target percentages are limited to 0–100.
- The calculator does not access school records, gradebooks, or institutional grading policies. It does not apply curves, extra credit, dropped-score rules, or instructor rounding.
- The calculation logic uses your entered values in the browser. The page loads Ahrefs Analytics and Google Analytics scripts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a weighted course grade calculated?
Weighted grade = Sum of (item score x item weight) / Sum of item weights. Each graded item contributes its score in proportion to its weight, so higher-weighted items count more toward the overall percentage.
How is the required final exam score calculated?
Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) / (Final exam weight / 100). If the result is above 100%, the target cannot be reached even with a perfect final exam; if it is at or below 0%, the target is already secured.
How many questions can I miss and still hit my target score?
The calculator finds the minimum correct answers needed as ceil(Target % / 100 x Total questions), then subtracts that from the total to give the maximum number you can miss and still reach the target, assuming every question is worth the same amount.
Can I change the letter-grade cutoffs used?
Yes. The letter-grade scale is a user-editable table - add, remove, or change any cutoff percentage and label. It labels percentage results in the modes that display letter grades; Attendance % displays an attendance rate without a letter grade. The default is a common A/B/C/D/F 90-80-70-60 scale, which you should replace if your school's scale differs.
Does this tool know my school's or instructor's actual grading policy?
No. It does not access any school record, gradebook, or institutional grading system, and it does not know or apply any specific school, course, or instructor's curve, extra credit, or rounding rule. You supply the numbers and the letter-grade cutoffs; the calculator only does the arithmetic.
Do item weights need to add up to 100%?
For the Final grade target mode, yes - all item weights plus the final exam weight must sum to 100%, since together they represent the whole course grade. The Weighted course grade mode normalizes by the sum of weights entered, so it works even if your weights do not total 100%.
