Final Grade Calculator

Enter your already-graded items with their scores and weights, the weight of your final exam, and the overall grade you want. The calculator works out the exact final exam score you need, with the formula, every assumption, and intermediate values shown alongside the result.

Item name Score (%) Weight (%)

How much the final exam counts toward the overall course grade.

The overall course grade you want to end up with.

How to calculate the final exam score you need

Enter your already-graded items, their scores and weights, the final exam weight, and your target overall grade. Click Calculate to see the required final exam score, the formula, intermediate values, and a status showing whether the target is achievable.

How the calculation works

The calculator first finds your current weighted score from the items you have already been graded on:

Current weighted score = Sum of (Item score x Item weight / 100)

Then it solves for the final exam score needed to reach the target overall grade:

Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) / (Final exam weight / 100)

For example, if your graded items so far are worth 70% of the course and add up to a current weighted score of 63, your final exam is worth 30%, and your target grade is 85%, the required final score is (85 - 63) / 0.30 = 73.33%.

Enter items and course weights

The calculator initially loads three sample rows: Assignments, Midterm, and Quizzes. Replace these values with your own course data.

  1. For each row, enter the Item name, Score (%), and Weight (%).
  2. Click Add item to create another row. Use Remove item to delete a row.
  3. Enter Final exam weight (%) and Target overall grade (%).
  4. Click Calculate to show the result.

Click Reset to restore the three sample rows, clear the final exam weight and target grade, and hide the result. A completely blank row is ignored. If you leave an item name blank but enter its score and weight, the result labels it Item 1, Item 2, and so on.

Calculate and read the result

The result shows Required final exam score, Current weighted score, and Status. The status is Achievable, Already secured, or Not achievable.

Under Formula used, the calculator lists the inputs, intermediate values, total weights, target, and Required final exam score (uncapped). The required score may be below 0% or above 100%; the status explains whether the target is already secured or cannot be reached with the entered weights.

Validation and calculation assumptions

Calculation requires at least one completed graded item. Scores must be from 0 to 100, item weights must be greater than 0 and up to 100, the final exam weight must be greater than 0 and up to 100, and the target overall grade must be from 0 to 100. Item weights plus the final exam weight must total 100%, within 0.05 percentage points.

  • It uses plain percentage inputs and linear weighted averaging.
  • It does not apply curves, extra credit, dropped scores, letter-grade cutoffs, or rounding rules.

Copy or download the result

Use Copy result to copy a plain-text summary to the clipboard. If clipboard access fails, the tool displays “Could not copy - select and copy manually.” Use Download result (.txt) to download a plain-text file named final-grade-calculator-result.txt.

What the calculator does not know

The calculator does not fetch school, course, or gradebook records. It does not know or apply a school, course, or instructor grading policy; it calculates only from the values you enter.

Privacy & Security

All calculation happens locally in your browser using only the values you type in. No data is uploaded, no account is required, and nothing you enter is sent to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the required final exam score calculated?

Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) / (Final exam weight / 100). Current weighted score is the sum of each graded item's score multiplied by its weight, divided by 100.

What if the required final exam score is over 100%?

It means the target grade cannot be reached even with a perfect final exam score, given the weights and grades entered. The calculator shows the uncapped value and marks the status as Not achievable.

What if the required final exam score is 0% or negative?

It means the target grade is already secured from the graded items entered, regardless of the final exam score, assuming the weights entered are accurate.

Do the weights need to add up to 100%?

Yes. The weights of all graded items plus the final exam weight must sum to 100%, since together they represent the whole course grade. The calculator checks this and shows an error if they do not.

Does this tool know my school's or instructor's actual grading policy?

No. It does not know or apply any specific school, course, or instructor grading policy, curve, or rounding rule. You must enter your own items, weights, and target grade; the calculator only does the arithmetic on the numbers you provide.
