How to enter scores and weights
Enter each graded item's score as a percentage and its weight. The calculator returns a weighted course percentage and a letter grade from the editable scale.
- Edit the letter-grade scale if your school's cutoffs differ from the defaults.
- Enter each item's score and weight. The item name is optional; a blank name receives a label such as
Item 1. - Click Calculate to display the weighted grade, letter grade, formula, and item contributions.
- Use Copy result or Download result (.txt) to save the plain-text result.
How the weighted grade is calculated
The calculator uses this formula:
Weighted grade = Sum of (item score × item weight) ÷ Sum of item weights
Weights are normalized by their total, so they do not need to add up to 100. For example, scores of 88, 95, and 78 with weights of 20, 10, and 30 produce (88×20 + 95×10 + 78×30) ÷ 60 = 84.17%.
Enter graded items and validate inputs
The calculator starts with three blank graded-item rows. Use Add item to add more. Enter scores as percentages of each item's possible points, such as 42/50 = 84.
- Completely blank rows are ignored.
- Partially completed rows are validated and can produce an error.
- Scores must be numeric and 0 or more. The calculator does not impose a maximum of 100, even though scores are entered as percentages.
- Weights must be numeric and greater than 0.
- At least one valid graded item is required.
Set the letter-grade scale
Edit the scale table to match the applicable grading policy. The default rows are A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60, and F at 0 percent. Each row needs a label and a minimum percentage from 0 to 100.
Use Add row to add a cutoff, or use the trash controls to remove scale rows.
Calculate, review, and save the result
Calculate displays the weighted course grade, letter grade, formula, each item's contribution, contribution total, weight total, and final values. Use Copy result for a plain-text summary or Download result (.txt) to save that summary as a .txt file.
Reset controls
- Reset clears the graded-item rows and hides the result, while retaining the letter-grade scale.
- Reset to default scale restores the default letter-grade scale.
- Trash controls remove scale rows and graded-item rows. The calculator keeps at least one graded-item row.
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculation is a linear weighted average. It does not apply curves, extra credit, dropped scores, instructor rounding, or institution-specific policies.
- It uses only the scores, weights, and cutoffs you enter; it does not access school records or gradebooks.
- It does not calculate a required future score. Use Final Grade Target mode in the full Grade Calculator for that task.
Privacy for calculator values
The calculation uses your calculator values locally in the browser. Those calculator values are not sent to a server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a weighted course grade calculated?
Weighted grade = Sum of (item score x item weight) / Sum of item weights. Each graded item contributes its score in proportion to its weight, so higher-weighted items count more toward the overall percentage.
Do my weights need to add up to 100?
No. This calculator normalizes by the sum of the weights you enter, so it works whether your weights total 100, 1, or any other number - what matters is the relative size of each weight, not its absolute value.
Can I change the letter-grade cutoffs?
Yes. The letter-grade table is user-editable - add, remove, or change any cutoff percentage and label. It defaults to a common A/B/C/D/F scale with cutoffs at 90, 80, 70, and 60 percent, which you should replace with your own school's scale if it differs.
Does this tool know my school's or instructor's actual grading policy?
No. It does not access any school record, gradebook, or institutional grading system, and it does not know or apply any specific school, course, or instructor's curve, extra credit, or rounding rule. You supply the scores, weights, and letter-grade cutoffs; the calculator only does the arithmetic.
What if I have a final exam I haven't taken yet?
This tool calculates a weighted grade from items you already have scores for. If you want to solve for the final exam score needed to reach a target overall grade, use the Final Grade Target mode on the full Grade Calculator instead.
