GPA Calculator

Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours to get your term GPA on a standard 4.0 scale. Add your prior cumulative GPA and credit hours to also get an updated cumulative GPA, with the formula, quality points, and intermediate values shown alongside the result.

Course name Grade Credit hours

Your GPA before this term, on the same 4.0 scale. Leave blank to see only this term's GPA.

Total credit hours completed before this term.

How to Use the GPA Calculator

Use the calculator in this order:

  1. Replace the sample rows: the table starts with Course 1/A/3, Course 2/B+/4, and Course 3/B/3. Enter your own course name, grade, and credit hours, or use Remove course to remove a row.
  2. Add courses when needed: select Add course, then complete the new row. A new row starts with grade A until you change it.
  3. Enter prior values optionally: fill in both Prior cumulative GPA (optional) and Prior total credit hours (optional) to calculate a cumulative GPA. Leave both blank for the current term only.
  4. Calculate: select Calculate to show the result, formula, quality points, and intermediate values.
  5. Save the result: use Copy result or Download result (.txt).

If only one row remains, Remove course clears that row instead of removing it.

What the Calculator Calculates

The calculator converts each accepted letter grade into grade points, multiplies those points by the course's credit hours to get quality points, and divides total quality points by total credit hours for the term GPA. With prior values, it calculates the cumulative GPA from the combined term and prior totals.

Quality points = Grade points x Credit hours

Term GPA = Sum of Quality points / Sum of Credit hours

Cumulative GPA = (Term quality points + Prior GPA x Prior credits) / (Term credits + Prior credits)

The result shows term GPA, cumulative GPA when prior values are entered, credit-hour totals, course quality points, and other intermediate values.

Enter Grades and Credit Hours

  • Accepted grades are A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, and F.
  • Credit hours show a 0.5 step, but each course value must be greater than 0.
  • Prior GPA must be from 0 to 4.0. Prior credit hours must be 0 or greater, and both prior fields must be completed together.
  • Rows with both a blank course name and blank credit hours are ignored. A blank course name receives a fallback label such as Course 1.

If validation fails, the calculator shows an error and hides the result section until valid values are submitted.

Grade Scale and Calculation Scope

The tool uses this standard unweighted 4.0 mapping: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.0. It does not add weighting for honors, AP, or IB courses or apply a school's separate grading policy. Check your institution's official scale when an exact institutional GPA is required.

Review, Copy, or Download the Result

After a valid calculation, review the headline GPA values and the quality-point table. Select Copy result to copy the plain-text summary, or select Download result (.txt) to download the same summary as a text file.

Privacy & Security

The calculator script performs the GPA calculation locally in your browser and contains no upload request for the calculator values you enter. This statement applies to the calculator inputs; the page also includes analytics and a separate email subscription form.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Sum of (Grade points x Credit hours for that course) divided by the sum of all credit hours. Each letter grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale, multiplied by the course's credit hours to get quality points, then all quality points are divided by total credits.

What grade point scale does this calculator use?

A standard unweighted 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some schools use a different scale, so check your institution's official scale if it varies.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA, not just this term's?

Enter your prior cumulative GPA and prior total credit hours in the optional fields. The calculator converts your prior GPA back into quality points, adds this term's quality points and credits, and divides the combined totals to give a new cumulative GPA.

Does this handle weighted GPA for honors or AP classes?

No. This calculator uses a standard unweighted 4.0 scale only. It does not add extra grade points for honors, AP, or IB courses, since weighting rules vary by school and are not applied here.

Does this tool know my school's official grading scale?

No. It applies a common standard 4.0 grade point scale and does not know or apply any specific school's official policy, plus/minus rules, or weighting. Confirm your official GPA with your registrar if it must be exact.
