How to calculate a test score
Enter Correct answers and Total questions, then click Calculate. The tool returns the Test score percentage, Questions missed, and a Letter grade based on the grading scale currently shown.
Set the grading scale
The default scale has A, B, C, D, and F rows with minimum cutoffs of 90, 80, 70, 60, and 0. Edit a label or cutoff, use Add row, or remove a row to match the scale for your test.
- Each row needs a label and a minimum percentage from 0 to 100.
- Keep at least one row in the scale.
- The rows are sorted by minimum percentage before the letter grade is selected.
A score below the lowest configured cutoff receives the last row's label. Include a 0% row if the scale must cover every score. Use Reset to default scale to restore the five default rows.
Calculate and read the result
- Enter whole-number values in Correct answers and Total questions.
- Click Calculate.
- Check the displayed values and formula.
The calculations are Score % = Correct answers / Total questions × 100 and Questions missed = Total questions - Correct answers. The percentage is displayed to two decimal places. The result table shows the calculation inputs and derived values; it does not reproduce the complete grading-scale table.
Copy or download the result
Copy result attempts to place the plain-text result on your clipboard. If browser clipboard support or permission is unavailable, it can show Could not copy - select and copy manually. Use Download result (.txt) to download the result as a plain-text .txt file.
Input rules and calculation limits
- Correct answers must be a whole number of 0 or more.
- Total questions must be a whole number greater than 0.
- Correct answers cannot exceed Total questions.
- Every question is treated as equal-weighted. The calculation does not apply curves, extra credit, dropped questions, or instructor rounding.
- The tool does not access school records, gradebooks, or testing systems. Supply the grading scale and policy that apply to your test.
Reset the calculator
Reset to default scale restores only the five default grading-scale rows. Reset clears the result and both answer inputs, then restores the default grading scale.
Privacy
During calculation, the page script reads the answer numbers and grading-scale values entered in the tool. This page also loads analytics scripts and includes a separate email subscription form, so the local implementation does not support a broader claim about all page data being sent, logged, or retained.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a test score percentage calculated?
Score % = Correct answers / Total questions x 100. Each question is assumed to be worth the same amount, so the percentage is simply the share of questions answered correctly.
Can I change the grading scale used for the letter grade?
Yes. The grading scale is a user-editable table - add, remove, or change any cutoff percentage and label. It defaults to a common A/B/C/D/F 90-80-70-60 scale, which you should replace with your own school's or test's scale if it differs.
Does this tool know my school's or test's actual grading policy?
No. It does not access any school record, gradebook, or testing system, and it does not know or apply any specific school, course, or test's curve, extra credit, or rounding rule. You supply the numbers and the grading scale; the calculator only does the arithmetic.
Does this calculator assume every question is worth the same amount?
Yes. It treats every question as equal-weighted. If some questions on your test are worth more points than others, use a points-based calculation instead of a question-count-based one.
