How the List Maker works
Enter or load source lines, choose a list style, and read the formatted text in the read-only output textarea. The page also provides a separate Interactive Preview for checklists.
Choose a list format and options
- Choose Bullets, Numbered, Roman Numeral, or Checklist.
- For Bullets, choose a value from Bullet character.
- Enable Auto-Nesting (detect indented sub-items) when indentation should represent nested items.
Bullet character offers six visible choices: bullet, dash, asterisk, arrow, star, and triangle.
Create a formatted list
- Type or paste lines into the input textarea.
- Select a list format and any needed options.
- Read the result in the read-only output textarea.
- Use Copy or Download to take the result from the page.
Auto-Nesting treats each tab or four leading spaces as one level, caps nesting at three levels, and omits blank lines from the formatted result.
Load text from a file
Drop a supported text file onto the input area, or select Upload to open a file picker. The selected file is read as text with FileReader.readAsText and placed in the input textarea. The shared text-input contract limits the picker to TXT, CSV, LOG, and Markdown text files and reports read failures near the input.
Use the interactive checklist preview
Select Checklist to show the separate Interactive Preview. Use Check all or Uncheck all to change its checkbox state. Checklist ticks are temporary page state; they are not included in the plain-text export and are not persisted after refresh.
Copy or download the result
Copy copies the output textarea content. Download creates a text/plain;charset=utf-8 download named list-maker-output.txt on this page. Compatibility with external applications is not confirmed.
Limitations and unconfirmed behavior
- Auto-Nesting uses one level per tab or four spaces, caps depth at three, and skips blank lines.
- Checklist ticks are temporary page state and are not persisted after refresh.
- The shared text-input helper reports file-read failures beside the input.
- The page loads
/text-tools/format-tools/list-maker/script.js. Shared page analytics scripts are also loaded, so the local files do not support an absolute claim about transmission of input text.

What do Check all and Uncheck all do?
In Checklist mode, Interactive Preview displays clickable checkboxes. Use Check all or Uncheck all to change the preview state. Checklist ticks are temporary page state; they are not included in the plain-text export and are not persisted after refresh.
