What This Tool Does
Paste or upload tabular data, assign fields to rows, columns, and values, then build a pivot table. The tool groups records by the selected row and column fields, calculates the chosen summaries, and lets you preview and export the result.
Assign Fields and Set Options
After the data is usable, fields appear automatically in Available Fields:
- Click +Row to add a field to Row Fields.
- Click +Col to add a field to Column Fields.
- Click +Value to add a field to Value Fields & Aggregation.
For assigned fields, use the up, down, and remove controls to change their order or take them out. Select Count, Sum, Average, Minimum, or Maximum for each value field. In Pivot Options, choose Exclude from aggregation or Treat as zero, set Empty cell display, and choose whether to show row subtotals, a grand total row, a grand total column, or Case-sensitive grouping.
How to Build and Export a Pivot Table
- Add your data: Paste CSV/TSV text, or drop/upload a CSV, TSV, TXT, XLSX, or XLS file.
- Fields: Columns are detected automatically from the header row, or generated when the first row is data.
- Assign roles: Use +Row, +Col, and +Value, then reorder or remove assigned fields as needed.
- Set options: Choose the aggregation, missing-value handling, empty-cell text, subtotal and grand-total visibility, and grouping case-sensitivity.
- Build: The pivot preview updates automatically as fields, aggregations, and options change.
- Export: Click Export CSV or Export Spreadsheet.
How Grouping and Aggregations Work
Row fields label groups down the left side. Multiple row fields create nested groups. Column fields label groups across the top; without one, the result uses a single value column. Value fields receive their selected aggregation. Count counts non-blank values by default; when no value field is selected, the fallback count counts matching records.
Grouping labels use trimmed values. Missing grouping values display as (blank). With Case-sensitive grouping enabled, values such as USA and usa remain separate; when it is disabled, they are grouped together.
Sum, Average, Minimum, and Maximum use values accepted by the tool's numeric parser. Other values are skipped and included in the non-numeric count in the stats. If you enable row subtotals with two or more row fields, the tool adds a subtotal after each group of the outermost row field. Grand totals re-aggregate the source records for the relevant row or column group.
Input and Parsing Limitations
- For XLSX/XLS files, the tool loads only the first worksheet.
- For pasted text, comma-versus-tab detection uses the first line. Keep the delimiter consistent with the rest of the data.
- Rows shorter than the detected field count are padded with blank values.
- Non-numeric values are skipped by numeric aggregations such as Sum and Average.
- The tool does not clean or validate source data before pivoting.
- For text files above
300,000characters, only the preview textarea is truncated; the full text is processed.
Browser Processing and Data Handling
The page implementation uses browser-side file reading, parsing, aggregation, and export logic. The assigned script contains no upload request. The local implementation does not define account requirements, usage limits, or broader privacy and security guarantees.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from Transpose Table or Unpivot Table?
Transpose Table swaps rows and columns without changing any values or grouping anything. Unpivot Table converts wide columns into long key-value records. Pivot Table does neither - it groups your records by the row and column fields you choose and aggregates a value field for each group, producing summary statistics rather than a reshaped copy of the same rows.
What happens to blank or missing values?
You choose. By default, blank or missing values are excluded from aggregation entirely - they don't count toward sum, average, minimum, maximum, or the count. Switch to "Treat as zero" to have blanks count as 0 for numeric aggregations. Either way, values that can't be parsed as numbers are always skipped for sum/average/min/max and reported in the stats.
What does the empty-cell display control?
It's separate from missing values in your source data. If a particular row/column combination has no matching records at all, that pivot cell has nothing to aggregate - you choose what text appears there (blank by default, or something like "0" or "n/a").
How do subtotals and grand totals work?
Row subtotals only apply when you use two or more row fields - a subtotal row is inserted after each group of the first (outermost) row field, aggregating across all its inner groups. The grand total row aggregates every record for each column group; the grand total column aggregates every record for each row group. Each is a real re-aggregation, not a sum of already-rounded display values.
What does "preserve labels" mean here?
Grouping can be case-sensitive ("USA" and "usa" stay separate groups) or case-insensitive (they merge into one group). Group labels use trimmed values, and missing grouping values display as "(blank)".
