How the batch file renamer works
Select files, build naming rules, check the proposed names, and download renamed copies. Files are read through browser File APIs and processed with JavaScript. The tool does not edit the original file contents or bytes. Files you exclude stay in the mapping table but are left out of downloads and manifests.
Choose files or a folder
- Drop files into the drop zone or click browse files to choose individual files.
- Use Select a folder when your browser supports
webkitdirectory. If folder selection is unavailable, the control is disabled and individual file selection remains available.
Set naming rules
Build the proposed base name with these controls. Find and Replace works on the base name without its extension; extension handling is separate.
- Use Prefix, Suffix, Find, and Replace with to change the base name.
- Turn on Treat "Find" as a regular expression or Case-sensitive find when needed. An invalid regular expression is reported beside the Find controls and disables downloads until corrected.
- Choose a value under Case conversion, or turn on the basic unsafe-character cleanup.
- Enable Add a sequence number, then choose its position, start, step, and zero padding.
- Enable Add a date token and choose today's date or the file's last-modified date. Dates use
YYYY-MM-DD. - Enable Add image dimensions (WxH) - only when readable when needed. Dimensions are attempted for recognized
jpg, jpeg, png, gif, webp, bmp, andsvgextensions only after successful browser decoding.
Sequence, date, and dimension additions use hyphen separators. If the generated base name is empty, it falls back to file. Unreadable image dimensions may be omitted or noted as unavailable.
Review the preview and Include options
Check the mapping table's Original name, Proposed name, Status, and Notes columns. Clear an Include checkbox to omit a file from the output while keeping it in the table.
Conflicting proposed names are flagged and block export by default. Fix the rules, exclude a file, or enable Auto-resolve collisions and choose a suffix style. The optional cleanup is only a light preset; it is separate from Filename Sanitizer.
Download renamed files and manifests
- For one included file, click Download renamed copy.
- For multiple included files, click Download ZIP + manifest. The ZIP contains renamed files plus
manifest.csvandmanifest.json. - Use Manifest CSV or Manifest JSON to export the mapping without the files.
The original file bytes are passed into the download or ZIP under the proposed names. Changing an extension does not convert the file or edit its contents. The tool does not establish preservation of filesystem-level metadata.
Limitations and failure cases
- There is no documented maximum file count, total byte size, filename length, or browser compatibility matrix. Large batches may be constrained by browser or device resources, especially while a ZIP is created in memory.
- An invalid regular expression is reported beside the Find controls and disables downloads until corrected.
- Folder selection requires browser support for
webkitdirectory. Use browse files if Select a folder is unavailable. - Image dimensions are not guaranteed for every image-like file because the extension must be recognized and the browser must decode the file successfully.
How to batch rename files
- Add files with the drop zone, browse files, or supported Select a folder.
- Set the naming controls and review the proposed names.
- Check Include, extension warnings, notes, and collision status.
- Download one renamed copy, a ZIP with manifests, or a manifest by itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does this rename my original files?
No. The tool creates renamed copies for download. It does not rename, move, or delete the originals.
If I change the extension, does it convert the file?
No. Only the downloaded name changes; the original file bytes are copied through unchanged. A content-mismatch warning may appear.
What happens if two files end up with the same proposed name?
Export is blocked by default. Fix the rules, exclude a file, or enable Auto-resolve collisions to append a numbered suffix.
Where do the date and dimension tokens come from?
The date uses today's date or the file's last-modified date in YYYY-MM-DD format. Dimensions are attempted only for recognized image extensions that the browser decodes successfully.
Does it upload my files anywhere?
No. Files are processed locally through browser APIs, and the imported implementation contains no upload request.
How is this different from Filename Sanitizer?
Batch File Renamer applies naming rules that you choose. It has an optional light unsafe-character cleanup, while the page points to Filename Sanitizer for the full portable-naming policy.
