Excel Cleaner

Paste a table or upload an Excel workbook, choose which sheets to clean, and repair structural noise - stray whitespace, blank or separator rows/columns, simple import artifacts - without breaking formulas, headers, merged cells, or cell types. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Drop an Excel workbook here

or

XLSX, XLS, XLSM

How the Excel Cleaner Works

Use this browser-based tool to clean selected sheets in an uploaded workbook or a table pasted from Excel or Sheets. It can trim text whitespace, repair listed import-noise characters, remove blank rows or columns, and remove separator-only rows or columns. You can review warnings and a cleaned preview before exporting an .xlsx file.

Choose Sheets and Cleanup Options

After you load a workbook, its sheets appear under Sheets to clean. Use Select all or Select none, then check only the sheets you want to process. The cleanup controls are independent:

  • Trim leading/trailing whitespace
  • Collapse repeated internal spaces
  • Repair import noise (non-breaking spaces, zero-width chars, stray tabs/newlines)
  • Remove fully blank rows and Remove fully blank columns
  • Remove separator-only rows (e.g. ----, ====) and Remove separator-only columns

Formula and Merged-Cell Safeguards

Formula cells are skipped during text cleanup. If a sheet contains formulas, structural row and column removal is skipped for that sheet, and the warnings list identifies it. Whitespace and import-noise cleanup can still run on its text cells.

Rows and columns that participate in a merged range are not removed. Structural row scanning also skips the first row of the sheet's used range; this is an implementation safeguard, not a general check for a row labeled as a semantic header.

Preview, Warnings, and Export

After processing, the page shows counts for cleaned sheets, trimmed or repaired cells, removed rows, and removed columns. Review the warnings, then use the per-sheet tabs to inspect the output. The preview shows up to 50 cleaned rows for the selected sheet and uses generic column labels such as Col 1, rather than a before-and-after diff.

Export .xlsx always creates a cleaned .xlsx download. Although the upload control accepts .xlsm, this implementation does not confirm or preserve VBA/macros in the exported file.

How to Use the Excel Cleaner

  1. Choose Drop an Excel workbook here or select browse files. The interface lists XLSX, XLS, and XLSM.
  2. Under Sheets to clean, select at least one sheet. Use Select all or Select none as needed.
  3. Set the cleanup checkboxes you want to apply.
  4. Cleaning starts automatically after you load a workbook or change a cleanup option.
  5. Review the counts, warnings, and preview tabs.
  6. Click Export .xlsx to download the result. Changing the pasted input or loading another workbook resets the previous result.

Limitations and Privacy

This tool does not deduplicate records or standardize dates, numbers, or currency values. The workbook is read and cleaned in the browser through the page's local file-reading and workbook-processing code. Do not rely on the tool to preserve macros when an .xlsm file is exported.

Troubleshooting Common Messages

  • Before a workbook is loaded, the cleanup phase remains hidden and the page waits for a usable pasted table or upload.
  • If no sheet is selected, the result remains hidden until at least one sheet is selected.
  • If the file cannot be read as a valid workbook, the page shows Could not read this file. Load a readable Excel workbook and try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the CSV & TSV Cleaner?

CSV & TSV Cleaner works on plain delimited text and has no concept of sheets, formulas, or merged cells. Excel Cleaner is workbook-aware: it lets you pick which sheets to clean, and it preserves workbook structure - formulas, headers, merged-cell behavior, and cell types - that a CSV file simply doesn't have.

Will this break my formulas?

No. Formula cells are never edited. If a sheet contains any formulas, blank/separator row and column removal is skipped for that sheet entirely, since deleting rows or columns could shift the cells a formula refers to. Whitespace and noise cleanup on text cells still runs normally.

What happens to merged cells?

Any row or column that participates in a merged range is never removed, so merged-cell layout is preserved. Trimming and noise repair can still apply to the text inside a merged cell.

Does this deduplicate rows or standardize dates and numbers?

No. This tool is scoped to workbook-safe structural cleanup only. Use a dedicated exact-duplicate remover for record deduplication, and a dedicated date or number/currency normalizer for value standardization.
