How to validate an IBAN candidate
Use Single Candidate for one value. Use Bulk Candidates for several values entered one per line or separated by commas.
Validate one IBAN
- Open Single Candidate and enter a candidate.
- Review the status, reasons, and breakdown. Results can show Formatted IBAN, Length, Allowed characters (letters/digits only), Country code, Country, Check digits, BBAN, Length matches country, Structure matches country, and MOD-97 checksum.
Before checking, the script removes all whitespace and changes letters to uppercase. Other non-letter and non-digit characters fail the allowed-characters check. If the input is empty, the result area displays Enter an IBAN candidate above.
Validate multiple IBAN candidates
- Open Bulk Candidates and paste candidates one per line, comma-separated, or in a mixture of both.
- Review the status and reasons for each row.
- After results appear, use Copy CSV or Download CSV. The download filename is
iban-validation-results.csv.
The generated CSV fields are IBAN, Country, Length, Structure OK, Checksum OK, Status, and Reasons. An empty bulk submission creates no result rows, so CSV export remains unavailable. The local implementation does not define a maximum number of candidates or an input size.
What the validator checks
- Removes whitespace and uppercases the candidate.
- Rejects characters other than letters and digits after normalization.
- Reads the two-letter country prefix.
- Checks the country-specific total length and BBAN structure from the local
COUNTRIESobject. - Checks the MOD-97 checksum when applicable.
The recognized country codes are the entries in the local COUNTRIES object. If the prefix is unknown, country-specific length and structure checks are unavailable. The script may still report a checksum reason in some malformed-prefix cases.
Interpret the result and limitations
A Valid IBAN result means the candidate passed the implemented format, country, length, structure, and checksum checks. It does not verify account existence, ownership, reachability, bank acceptance, or whether a transfer can be made. The local country list has no supplied version or source here, so this page does not establish that it is current or complete relative to an external IBAN registry.
Privacy and local processing
The validator logic processes candidates in the browser, and its script does not make a network request containing candidate values. The page also imports analytics and other networked assets, so do not treat this as a page-wide promise that nothing is transmitted. Follow your own data-handling policy when using real account numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does a "Valid IBAN" result mean the account exists?
No. It checks the candidate's format, country prefix, length, BBAN structure, and MOD-97 checksum. It does not confirm that an account exists, is open, belongs to a particular person, or can receive a transfer.
Is it safe to paste real IBANs into this tool?
The validator logic processes candidates in your browser and does not make a network request containing candidate values. The page also loads other networked assets, so follow your organization's data-handling policy.
Which countries does it recognize?
It recognizes the country codes listed in the local COUNTRIES object. An unrecognized prefix is flagged, and country-specific length and structure checks are unavailable.
Does bulk mode accept comma-separated lists?
Yes. Bulk input accepts candidates one per line, comma-separated on a single line, or a mix of both.
