Metadata Remover

Select an image, PDF, audio, or Office document file and see its embedded metadata grouped by namespace before anything changes. Pick a safe preset or individual fields, then download a cleaned copy plus a removal report - all locally in your browser.

Drop a file here to inspect its metadata

or

JPEG, PNG, WebP, PDF, MP3, WAV, FLAC, and OOXML Office documents (.docx/.xlsx/.pptx) - one file at a time

What does this metadata remover do?

This tool reads a file's embedded metadata in your browser and displays the recognized fields or blocks grouped by namespace. You then choose a preset or individual fields to remove, and download a cleaned copy plus a plain-text report. The report covers recognized and displayed metadata only. Your original file is not modified, and the file is not uploaded.

Supported formats and namespaces

  • JPEG - EXIF and IPTC/Photoshop summaries use the tool's recognized tag-name subsets, plus XMP packets. EXIF, IPTC, and XMP are shown and removed as whole blocks.
  • PNG - tEXt/zTXt/iTXt text chunks (removable individually), the eXIf chunk, and the tIME chunk.
  • WebP - EXIF and XMP RIFF chunks.
  • PDF - every key in the Info dictionary (Title, Author, Producer, dates, custom keys) removable individually, plus the XMP metadata stream as a whole.
  • MP3 - ID3v2 frames removable individually (title, artist, comments, embedded art, etc.), and the fixed-size legacy ID3v1 tag as a whole block.
  • WAV - RIFF LIST/INFO tags removable individually, plus the bext (broadcast extension) and embedded ID3 chunks as whole blocks.
  • FLAC - Vorbis comments removable individually, plus embedded picture blocks.
  • Office documents (.docx/.xlsx/.pptx) - document properties in docProps, including core, application, and custom properties, with supported properties removable individually.

Presets and individual fields

Choose Remove all metadata (recommended) to select every recognized item, Keep author/copyright, remove the rest to preserve labels or keys matching author, artist, creator, copyright, by-line, or composer, or use Custom selection.

Individual selection is available for PDF Info keys, ID3v2 frames, Vorbis comments, WAV INFO tags, PNG text chunks, and OOXML document properties. JPEG EXIF/IPTC/XMP, PNG eXIf and tIME, WebP EXIF/XMP, and ID3v1 are handled as whole blocks or namespaces where applicable.

What stays unchanged - and what may be rewritten

Pixel data, PDF page content and fonts, audio samples, and document body text, images, and formatting are preserved semantically. The tool does not redact or blur visible content. PDF files are regenerated when saved, and Office files are regenerated when their ZIP container is saved, so those downloads may not be byte-for-byte identical and their size may change. The cleaned filename appends -cleaned before the extension.

Unsupported formats and limits

MP4/MOV/M4A, HEIC/HEIF, Ogg, most other video containers, TIFF-based raw photo formats, and legacy binary Office formats (.doc/.xls/.ppt) are unsupported. Removing some of their metadata would require re-encoding or re-multiplexing, which this tool does not do. A PDF's metadata inside individual images or attachments is not scanned.

The tool removes only metadata structures it recognizes, and a supported file may contain no recognized metadata. It does not guarantee secure or forensic deletion.

How to remove metadata

  1. Drop a file onto the drop zone or click browse files.
  2. Review the metadata listed under each namespace - nothing is removed yet.
  3. Pick a preset, or switch to Custom selection and toggle individual fields or namespaces; the cleaned result updates automatically.
  4. Click Download cleaned file and, if needed, Download removal report.

Removal report and downloads

The report lists recognized and displayed fields that were removed or kept. If no fields are selected, formats that do not regenerate output keep the original bytes; PDF and Office files are still regenerated when saved, so those downloads may differ in bytes or size even when visible content is preserved.

Privacy and processing limits

Files are read, inspected, and rewritten in browser memory using the File API, pdf-lib for PDFs, and JSZip for Office documents. Files are not uploaded to a server. The interface accepts one file at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool guarantee secure or forensic deletion of metadata?

No. This tool strips the metadata structures it recognizes from the copy it gives you. It does not claim secure or forensic deletion, does not scrub metadata that might exist in other copies of the file, and does not guarantee every possible metadata mechanism in every format has been removed.

Will this change what my file looks like or renders as?

No. Pixel data, page content and fonts, audio samples, and document text, images, and formatting are preserved semantically. PDF and Office files are regenerated when saved, so their bytes or size may change. This tool never redacts or blurs visible content.

Does it rename my file?

No. The cleaned download keeps your original file name with "-cleaned" appended before the extension. Use a dedicated Filename Sanitizer if you also want portable file names.

What formats aren't supported?

MP4/MOV/M4A, HEIC/HEIF, Ogg, most other video containers, TIFF-based raw photo formats, and legacy binary Office formats (.doc/.xls/.ppt) are flagged as unsupported. Some metadata in these formats would require re-encoding or re-multiplexing, which this tool does not do.

Why can't I select individual EXIF tags or ID3v1 fields?

PDF Info keys, ID3v2 frames, Vorbis comments, WAV INFO tags, PNG text chunks, and OOXML document properties can be toggled individually. JPEG EXIF/IPTC/XMP, PNG eXIf and tIME, WebP EXIF/XMP, and the fixed-size ID3v1 tag are handled as whole blocks or namespaces where applicable. PDF metadata inside individual images or attachments is not scanned.

Does it upload my files anywhere?

No. Files are read, inspected, and rewritten entirely in your browser using the File API, pdf-lib, and JSZip. Nothing is sent to a server.
