Edit EPUB metadata in your browser
Use the EPUB Metadata Editor to edit supported title, creator, language, identifier, publisher, date, subject, description, contributor, and cover-reference fields. The tool validates the result and generates a rebuilt EPUB in your browser.
What the editor can change
After you upload an EPUB, the form is pre-filled with the supported metadata fields detected by the tool. These include title, creators, contributors, Language code, identifiers, publisher, dates, subjects, description, and the cover reference.
Creators, contributors, identifiers, dates, and subjects can have multiple entries. Role, file-as, scheme, and event are free-text inputs; the tool does not validate them against a vocabulary. Selecting a primary identifier can also update the package unique-identifier attribute when an existing value is present. The tool does not fully validate or repair every possible package identifier reference.
The rebuilt metadata contains only fields represented by this form. Unsupported metadata elements, attributes, and refinements are not preserved.
How to edit and download an EPUB
- Drop a
.epubfile onto the upload area, or select browse files. - Review the supported fields detected in the form, then edit or add the values you need.
- Edit the metadata fields. The tool automatically rebuilds and validates the EPUB, then shows the modeled fields that changed.
- Click Download .epub to save the rebuilt file. Use Download change report for the plain-text comparison.
Validation and limitations
The tool checks the rebuilt OPF as XML, required <metadata>, <manifest>, and <spine> elements, required title, language, and identifier values, spine references, and manifest files. An EPUB containing META-INF/encryption.xml is rejected.
The tool replaces the metadata node, serializes the complete OPF document, and repacks the archive. It does not intentionally edit manifest entries, spine order, or content files, but this is not a byte-for-byte preservation guarantee. Applying the form without modeled edits still validates and generates a rebuilt EPUB; the report records that no supported fields changed.
The cover control changes the legacy <meta name="cover"> reference to an existing manifest image or clears that reference. It does not change manifest properties="cover-image" values or image files.
Privacy and file handling
EPUB reading, editing, validation, and repacking occur client-side in your browser. The page does not send the uploaded file to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool upload my EPUB anywhere?
No. The EPUB is read, edited, and repacked inside your browser.
Will this change the book's text or convert the file?
It edits supported metadata and outputs a rebuilt EPUB. It does not intentionally edit chapter, image, stylesheet, manifest, or spine content, but the OPF is serialized and the archive is repacked.
Can I edit DRM-protected EPUB files?
No. If the archive contains META-INF/encryption.xml, the tool refuses to open it and does not attempt to remove or bypass DRM.
What does the change report contain?
It compares the modeled fields listed by the tool, such as title, creators, contributors, language, identifiers, publisher, dates, subjects, description, and cover reference. It does not compare every possible OPF metadata element.
