What This Tool Does
The PDF Metadata Editor edits supported document-level metadata: the Document Info dictionary (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, creation and modification dates, and custom keys) and recognized fields already present in an embedded XMP metadata packet. It does not intentionally edit page content, fonts, images, form fields, or annotations.
How to Edit PDF Metadata
- Load the file: Use Drop a .pdf file here or click browse files.
- Review the fields: Standard Info fields are always shown with existing values when available. Custom Info fields and recognized XMP fields appear only when detected.
- Edit the values: Type replacements in the fields. For applicable XMP list fields, enter multiple values separated by
;. - Edit the values: The tool automatically re-saves the supported metadata after loading and whenever a field changes, then shows the changed fields before and after.
- Save the results: Click Download .pdf for the edited file or Download change report for the plain-text report.
Clearing Fields and Detected XMP
Clear a Document Info field to delete that Info dictionary entry. Clearing a detected XMP field rewrites its existing XML element or container with an empty value; it does not remove the XMP property or packet. The tool does not create a new XMP packet or add undetected XMP properties.
Supported Files and Limitations
Select a PDF file. Non-.pdf selections and files without a %PDF- header are rejected. Malformed PDFs or PDFs with unsupported structures may fail during loading. Encrypted PDFs are detected and editing is disabled; the tool does not decrypt them.
If the tool detects an AcroForm signature field, it warns that changing metadata invalidates any existing digital signature. Historical metadata in incremental-update history or embedded files is not guaranteed to be removed. The tool edits supported metadata and re-saves the PDF; it does not intentionally edit page content, fonts, images, form fields, or annotations, but the implementation does not establish byte-level preservation.
Change Report
The plain-text report lists each metadata field that changed, with its before and after value. If no values changed, it records that no fields changed.
Privacy & Security
The PDF is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded by this tool. The page loads its PDF library from jsDelivr, so this does not mean the page makes no network requests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this remove visible content, like a watermark or a page?
No. This tool only touches document-level metadata objects. It does not redact, crop or remove anything visible on a page.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
No. If the PDF is encrypted, the tool warns you and disables editing rather than attempting to decrypt it.
What happens to a digitally signed PDF?
You can still apply metadata changes, but you'll be warned first: any modification after signing invalidates the existing signature, since the signature is computed over the file's original bytes.
What if I don't change anything?
For a successfully loaded, non-encrypted PDF, the current metadata is re-saved automatically, and the change report notes whether any fields changed. Encrypted PDFs disable editing, and malformed or unsupported files may fail during loading.
