Split PDF

Split a local PDF into multiple files by custom page ranges, every N pages, bookmarks (where the PDF has an outline), or one file per page. Preview the split boundaries directly on the page thumbnails, review predictably named output files before building, and download everything as a single ZIP.

Choose a Split Method

Choose the method that matches the result you need: Page ranges for selected groups, Every N pages for sequential batches, Bookmarks for top-level outline sections, or One file per page for individual pages.

How to Use the Splitter

  1. Drop a .pdf file on Drop a .pdf file here, or click browse files. The page renders its thumbnails.
  2. Use the mode tabs to choose Page ranges, Every N pages, Bookmarks, or One file per page.
  3. Enter the mode's settings or review the detected bookmarks. Thumbnails mark split boundaries; pages left out of every output are grayed out and marked skipped.
  4. Check Output files to review each filename and page range before creating files.
  5. Wait for the split preview to finish building automatically.
  6. Click Download. One output downloads as a .pdf; multiple outputs download as a .zip.

Split by Page Ranges

Enter comma-separated groups such as 1-3, 4-6, 10. A single number creates a one-page file; a dash range creates a multi-page file. Reversed ranges are normalized, and range endpoints are clamped to the document's page count. Malformed groups and invalid or out-of-range single values are ignored. Overlapping and duplicate groups are allowed, so output files can contain overlapping pages. Pages not covered by a valid group are skipped.

If no valid groups remain after parsing, the output preview stays empty and the output preview remains empty until you enter at least one valid group.

Split Every N Pages

Set Pages per file. Its effective minimum is 1. The document is divided into sequential chunks, and the final file contains any remaining pages. For example, 3 pages per file on a 10-page document produces 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10.

Split by Bookmarks

Readable top-level entries in the PDF outline become split points. Each bookmark starts a file that ends before the next bookmark or at the document end. Nested sub-bookmarks are not separate split points. Check Keep pages before the first bookmark as their own file to include a leading file.

Unresolvable bookmark destinations are skipped. If multiple top-level bookmarks point to the same page, only the first is kept. The mode is unavailable when no top-level bookmarks are detected or the outline cannot be read.

One File Per Page

Every page of the document becomes its own single-page PDF. The interface reports the total number of files.

Review Previews and Output Names

Thumbnails mark each split boundary. Pages not included in a segment are grayed out and marked skipped. The Output files list shows filenames and page ranges before you build.

Range and every-N filenames include the source name and page numbers. Bookmark filenames include a sanitized bookmark title, and per-page filenames use a page-number suffix, such as report_page_7.pdf.

Encrypted, Signed and Malformed PDFs

An encrypted or password-protected PDF is detected up front, splitting is disabled, and the tool does not decrypt it. A detected AcroForm signature flag produces a warning, but splitting can continue. Newly saved outputs do not retain verifiable cryptographic signatures, although visible page content is preserved.

Some structurally inconsistent PDFs can continue after parser warnings, using the page structure read by pdf-lib. If PDFLib cannot parse the file, processing stops. A failure while rendering thumbnails can also show an error and stop the workflow.

Privacy and Processing Limits

Reading, thumbnail rendering, page copying, and ZIP packaging happen in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server. The original file object is not mutated or automatically downloaded. Pages are copied with their dimensions, rotation, and visible content preserved; the tool does not extract text or merge pages.

The local implementation does not define a maximum PDF size, page-count limit, memory limit, processing-time expectation, or supported-browser matrix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool upload my PDF anywhere?

No. The PDF is read, split and packaged entirely inside your browser using pdf-lib, pdfjs-dist and JSZip. Nothing is uploaded to a server at any point.

Will this overwrite or modify my original file?

No. Your original file object is never mutated or automatically downloaded. New output PDFs are built automatically when a valid split configuration is ready, and downloaded later only when you click Download.

Can this split an encrypted or password-protected PDF?

No. This tool never attempts to decrypt a PDF. If it detects encryption it warns you and disables splitting - remove the password with the file's owner first.

What happens if I split a digitally signed PDF?

The tool checks for AcroForm signature flags and warns you when they are detected, but still lets you split the PDF. It creates newly saved output PDFs, so detected cryptographic signatures will not verify in those files, even though the visible page content is preserved.

Does this extract text or merge pages together?

No, neither. Pages are copied into newly saved documents without text extraction, and this tool only separates pages into more files; it does not merge files or pages together.

How are the output files named?

Names are shown in the preview before you build. Page-range and every-N splits use the source filename plus page numbers, bookmark splits also include the bookmark title, and per-page splits use a page-number suffix.
