XML Validator & Formatter

Paste your XML to validate, format, and beautify it. The validation status updates as you type.

Input XML

What this XML tool checks and produces

This page provides a formatter and validator for checking XML well-formedness, or whether the document follows basic XML syntax rules. It can also produce formatted or minified XML in the output editor. No visible control confirms DTD or XSD validation.

How to validate and format XML

  1. Open the Validate & Format tab.
  2. Enter XML in the input editor, or use the Upload control.
  3. Under Indent, choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or Tab; the output updates automatically.
  4. Enable Minify if you want to use that available output option.
  5. Review the automatically updated result in the output editor and check the status area.
  6. Use Copy to copy the output or Download to retrieve it as a file.

Choose between Validate & Format and Tree View

Use Validate & Format for the input editor, output editor, formatting choices, and processing controls. Select the Tree View tab to inspect the parsed XML as a nested element tree.

What the controls do

  • Drop file and Upload: Provide XML as a file instead of entering it in the input editor.
  • Indent: Select 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or Tab for the available indentation choices.
  • Minify: Turn on the available minification option before processing.
  • Validation and formatting update automatically as input or settings change.
  • Copy and Download: Retrieve the contents of the output editor.
  • status: Review the status reported by the tool after processing.

Limitations and failure cases

The confirmed scope is XML well-formedness and formatting. The page does not show controls for DTD, XSD, namespace, semantic, application-configuration, sitemap, RSS, or SVG-path validation. A successful result does not prove that an application-specific XML document has the meaning or settings your project requires.

Formatting changes whitespace and structure presentation; it does not repair arbitrary XML meaning. Exact source-location highlighting is not confirmed by the inspected markup. No documented maximum input size was found, and the precise effect and timing of Minify are not stated in the visible implementation. The inspected page also does not establish whether XML is processed only in the browser or sent elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between "Well-formed" and "Valid" XML?

A "well-formed" document follows the basic syntax rules of XML. A "valid" document also matches a specific DTD or XML Schema (XSD). This tool focuses on well-formedness; no DTD or XSD control is visible on the page.

Can this tool format SVG files?

SVG source is XML-based, so you can enter it or upload it for the available well-formedness checking and formatting workflow. The page does not show a control for repairing broken SVG paths.

Is there a limit on the number of lines I can format?

No documented maximum input size or unlimited-line guarantee was found. The practical capacity of a document may depend on the browser and device, so test larger files before relying on the result.
